...................................................
he village centre has a pretty village green and many of its buildings date to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Farmers Arms pub serves excellent food.TNearby Conishead Priory, described by English Heritage as 'a very important Gothic revival country house with few peers in the north west; the distinctive two towers of the front elevation are an important local landmark.'
The building has occupied the site since Elizabethan times, which was replaced in the nineteenth century by the present house. Thomas Bradyll, a colonel in the Coldstream Guards and the son of one of George III's Grooms of the Bedchamber, owned the estate at that time. For a time it was a hospital for the Northumberland and Durham Miners but now the building serves as the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre and is an international Buddhist College.
From Baycliff there is easy access down Swinestead or Leythey Lane to the shores of Morecambe Bay. Also nearby is Birkrigg Common ( which has a Stone Circle ) and the renowned Ulverston Golf Course.
Numerous pleasant countryside and shore-side walks, of course, are on the doorstep.
Baycliff lies approximately 3 miles from the charming Market town of Ulverston ( birthplace of Stan Laurel) and a little further is the boundary of the fabulous Lake District National Park. Barrow can be easily reached in 15 minutes or so, taking the picturesque drive via the Coast Road.
