ABOUT THE AREA
Swallows Barn is in a small valley in beautiful countryside between Wells, Pilton and Glastonbury. The major towns of the area being Bristol, Bath, Taunton and Yeovil are all within commuting distance whilst Castle Cary is the nearest train station with fast links to London.
The local centres include -
Wells, the smallest city in England (population about 11,000) situated between the Somerset Levels and the Mendip Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has local markets twice a week and many medieval buildings including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace.
Glastonbury's past and its present are linked with its dominant landmark, the Tor. It’s been a religious centre since the times of legends. The town grew up alongside the Abbey and is a thriving town and a major tourist venue. Medieval Glastonbury clusters around the evocative ruins of the Abbey.
Shepton Mallet is another historic town lying to the north east whilst Street is a mile beyond Glastonbury. All four offer a wide range of facilities, societies and activities.
