Description

This beautifully presented two-bedroom house is the epitome of contemporary lateral living. It sits on the fringes of Islington and Clerkenwell, in a masterfully designed development by Tasou Associates Architects. Its lower-ground-floor position allows an easy transition out to a triple-aspect courtyard, from which plenty of natural light is beckoned in.

The Tour

Chadwell Mews is part of seven mews houses off Chadwell Street. A state of the art security system includes secure gates and CCTV which lead through a beautifully planted and well-lit driveway. Here, there is another gate and a set of steps descends to a private courtyard garden.

From the garden, an oversized pivot door grants entry to the expansive kitchen and main living area. Built into the ground, the highly insulated concrete walls, floors and roof are designed to lose little heat in winter and work to keep the house cool in hotter months. Underfloor heating runs throughout the space and light pours into every corner via atmospherically placed skylights and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors.

A composite stone island demarcates the kitchen and incorporates a stainless steel sink with a Quooker tap. Oak veneer cabinetry sits below with further cupboards above; a utility room lies adjacent at this end of the plan.

A sculptural concrete display shelf creates a focal point in the versatile living area. Bespoke floating drawers and shelves delineate a study or library area in the rear of the room.

Serene and peaceful, the main bedroom has plenty of storage in the form of a wardrobe and built-in drawers. Past floor-to-ceiling shelving is a magnificent en suite bathroom, accessed through a discreet pocket door. Brushed brass fixtures here are paired elegantly with neutral porcelain tiles; there is also a free-standing bath, a walk-in shower, oak veneer cupboards and twin sinks below backlit mirrors.

The second bedroom has built-in mirrored wardrobes. It also has an ensuite with Jack-and-Jill-style entry from the main living space.

Outdoor Space

The private courtyard can be accessed from both bedrooms and the living room. It doubles as both a secluded retreat and a light-well serving the interior. A grey porcelain floor runs underfoot, and there is a wide concrete planter against the wall to encourage climbing plants. The space is perfect for entertaining, offering privacy and plenty of space for a dining table and chairs.

The Area

Chadwell Mews sits off Chadwell Street, which runs in an easterly direction off the delightfully verdant Myddleton Square, the largest square in Clerkenwell. Other local green spaces include Regent’s Canal, Spa Green Fields and Highbury Fields.

Clerkenwell was named the London winner of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2024. Stalwart restaurants like The Eagle, the first gastro pub in London, St John and Luca and Bouchon Racine are revered local favourites. In nearby Exmouth Market the much-loved Moro and the original outpost of Caravan can be counted among the excellent local offerings alongside newcomers Morchella and Ken's.

We've written more about our recommendations in Clerkenwell in our Journal.

For shopping and a wealth of drinking and dining options Islington’s vibrant Upper Street is a three-minute walk to the north. From here, beautiful Camden Passage offers an array of independent food provisions, boutiques, cafés and restaurants as well as antiques and market stalls. The N1 centre off Upper Street is a pedestrianised shopping centre with a cinema, live entertainment venue and food market. Nearby, Islington farmers' market is held every Sunday in Chapel Market.

The house is a short stroll from some of London’s best theatre, comedy and live music venues including Sadlers Wells Theatre, The Almedia Theatre, The Angel Comedy Club at The Bill Murray and the Union Chapel.

Transport links are superb; the home is located a three-minute walk south of Angel Underground station (Northern Line). Farringdon station (Circle, Elizabeth, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines and National Rail) is approximately 15 minutes walk from the apartment and provides quick access to the West End and London’s major airports. King's Cross (Piccadilly, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City, Victoria lines and National Rail) is a 20-minute walk in a westerly direction.
