The Area - One of Dorset's best kept secrets, Fifehead Neville sits in the Blackmore Vale alongside the River Divelish, some two miles South west of the pretty market town of Sturminster Newton. the name is derived from the old English for five hides of land, belonging to the Neville family, and was recorded in the Domesday Book, (1086) as Fifehide. The records show, that there were originally, eight households, for workers on the estate and the village has grown around the estate to approximately 56 households. If resting amongst the beautiful countryside is not enough the village offers excellent access to many pathways and foot paths, with many out door pursuits and field sports available within a short drive. Why not explore the little villages of the Fifeheads. You can discover a giant mausoleum in the churchyard and the packhorse bridge over the River Divelish (one of only a few surviving in the county). Pass the site of one of Dorset’s most impressive Roman villas, which has unearthed Roman jewellery, elegant stone columns and elaborate mosaics. Return via medieval track ways and wild woodland amongst the medieval landscape and legend of the magical White Hart at Kings Stag. The nearby market town of Sturminster Newton offers a wide variety of independent shops, eateries and public houses as well as two larger supermarkets, and both Doctors and Dental practices, here you will also find 'The Exchange' where you can take in a live music or comedy show, or join in with one of the many groups and societies which use this fantastic facility, there are larger towns slightly farther afield, including the County Town of Dorchester, or for refreshments closer to home you might try Plumber Manor or nearby are the Antelope Inn in Hazelbury Bryan and the Green Man in Kings Stag. There is also Olives et Al, near Sturminster Newton, which offers a huge choice of delicious picnic supplies
For those who like to participate in water sports, the world famous and renowned Jurassic Coast is only some 45 minutes away by car, here not only will you find an array of stunning beaches and coastal features, you might also use the opportunity to take advantage of Portland's Sailing Academy where many British Olympians hone their skills.
