VILLAGE OF TARHOVO

Tarhovo is a village in Northern Bulgaria. It is located in the Municipality of Sevlielvo, District of Gabrovo.

The village is located 8 miles away from the Municipal centre - the Town of Sevlievo, 13 miles away from the District centre - the Town of Gabrovo, 13 miles from the Town of Dryanovo and 28 miles away from the City of Veliko Tarnovo.

The village is situated at the foot of the Stara Planina and offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. It is near the eponymous Tarhovo Dam and also there is a nearby equestrian centre.

In the village, there is a village hall, a community centre, a church and a shop. The population of the village is about 90 people, according to the latest census. There are ex-pats living in Tarhovo as well as holiday homeowners.

The village of Tarhovo originated back in the Middle Ages as a centre of falconry where falcons were trained to be used for hunting by the retinue of the Bulgarian king who lived in the nearby capital of Tarnovo. When the Ottomans took over the territory of the Kingdom of Tarnovo, falconry in Tarhovo was not only preserved but also developed to perfection. People engaged in this craft, which required a lot of time and effort, were organised into a category of population with a special status.

The Church of Saint Dimitar in Tarhovo was built in 1860. It was consecrated in 1865. In 1933, a major repair was carried out on the church, which was damaged by the earthquake in 1913.

MUNICIPALITY OF SEVLIEVO

Sevlievo Municipality is situated in Central Northern Bulgaria, at the crossroads between Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo. Corridor E-71 goes near Sevlievo, providing excellent transport links.

Sevlievo Municipality is one of the most developed ones in Bulgaria. There are several leading metal-working companies, firms working in the field of wood-processing as well as companies for the food industry are located in town.

The town has excellent transport links to important commercial and cultural centers like Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Pleven. The Central Bus Station in Sevlievo is the link where buses arrive and depart throughout the country.

Sevlievo provides excellent opportunities for tourism: the town has many landmarks that attract tourists all year round. 2 miles west is situated Alexander Stamboliyski dam lake which, with its length of 14 miles, provides all opportunities for sailing, rowing and water sports, fishing, beach.

Sevlievo hosts both national and international festivals and celebrations, such as International Band Festival and the traditional Festival of the story. Each year, the town holds a freestyle wrestling tournament in memory of Dan Kolov.

The town is also a home to a Pumpkin Museum, honouring this delicious plant. Pumpkins are commonly used in the Bulgarian kitchen and particularly in Sevlievo, which is also known as The Pumpkin Capital and hosts a Pumpkin Festival annually in October, with its first edition taking place back in 2006. The programme of the festival traditionally includes fun and diverse pumpkin-related activities, such as an outdoor pumpkin carving, a gastronomy exhibition, concerts, pumpkin competition, as well as a "pumpkin party"-a concert with the participation of local and visiting bands in the town's square.

TOURISM & LANDMARKS

Medieval City "Hotalich" - located on the hill (Krushevski hill) on the north side of town. It was discovered by chance in 70's of the last century. After excavation of archaeologists have discovered several medieval towns on top of one another. There are found also several churches from different eras, which are located at both ends of the medieval city.

Historical Museum Hadzhistoyanov School was built in the period 1844-1845, with funds by the patriot Hadzhi Stoyan Nikolov. He was the first secular schools in Sevlievo, and one of the top ten schools built in Bulgaria before The Liberation.

Ethnographic complex Dandolov home - the complex is located nearly in the center of town. It consists of three houses with a common courtyard, each of houses is the gateway to the courtyard and exit into the street. After restoration in 1973 the complex was turned into a Museum of Sevlievo ethnographic heritage. The complex is common to host exhibitions and other social events.

Sevlievo Clock Tower was built in 1777. It is one of the cultural monuments of the town that can not be forgotten once you saw it. For years after its construction the tower has repeatedly been corrected and restored, but its appearance remains.

Motor range Sevlievo is located 5 miles from the town and has become an international arena for conducting motorcycle races at the highest level for the past 10 years.


DISTRICT OF GABROVO

Gabrovo is situated at the foot of the central Balkan Mountains, in the valley of Yantra River, and is known as an international capital of humour and satire. It is as well as noted for its Bulgarian National Revival architecture. Gabrovo is also known as the longest town in Bulgaria, stretching over 15 miles along the Yantra, yet reaching only 1 mile in width at places. Near Gabrovo is located the geographic center of Bulgaria - Uzana.

The territory of present Gabrovo was inhabited 10 000 - 8000 years ago during the Stone Age. There a rich culture had been already formed, when Thracian tribes built their settlements 1600 years ago. Some Roman and Byzantium fortresses are partially preserved even today.

In the course of time Gabrovo was given more than one name - it was called the Capital of factories, the Bulgarian Manchester and the Loan office of Bulgaria in appraisal of great contribution of Gabrovo industry to the state treasury.

Transportation

Central geographic location determines Gabrovo as a busy transport hub. It is connected by roads with convenient surrounding communities and major cities in Northern and Southern Bulgaria. BALGARKA NATURE PARK

Bulgarka Nature Park takes the northern slopes of Central Stara Planina Range. It is established in 2002 to preserve and maintain the beech ecosystems, the plant and animal life and cultural heritage of the region. The park lies on the territory of two municipalities - Gabrovo and Tryavna on a total area of 21 772 ha, with average altitude of 940 m above the sea level. More then a few protected areas are within its boundaries, including the Open Air Museum Etar and the Sokolski Monastery. About 80 % of the total area is taken by woods. The park is a natural habitat of more than 1300 plants, 32 of which are considered as protected species and included in the Red book of Bulgaria.

More than 70 % of the medicative herbs in the country can be found here. There is a great variety of animals - eagle, small eagle, rock partridge, small hawk, black woodpecker, woodcock, hollow-pigeon, marten, bear, otter, wolf, royal stag, deer etc. Beautiful nature and different landforms favor the development of many types of tourism.

The architectural-ethnographic complex "Etar"

The architectural-ethnographic complex "Etar" is the first open air museum of this kind opened in Bulgaria. It was established on September 7th, 1964. The museum is situated 5 miles South of the town of Gabrovo.

GRADISHTE

Only 2 miles away from downtown Gabrovo lays the Gradishte locality. Here, amid fresh pine woods a spacious meadow with a children play area and many picnic sites host Gabrovians in need of recreation. It is very close to the Omnitheatre and the small Zoo, situated by the road up the hill. Further beyond are the ruins of the Gradishte fortress, which was built somewhere between IV - V C to protect the pass to Shipka. On the highest point of the site a great basilica used to rise long ago. Today it is a beautiful viewpoint of Gabrovo from above.
