Every morning, as the sun rises over the timeless historic centre of Cefalù on Sicily's beautiful Tyrrhenian coast, the gentle tolling of the town's cathedral bells soundtracks the locals as they amble down to the bars on Piazza Duomo. Just metres behind this enchanting little corner of Golden-era Italy is a tight cluster of houses far out of the reach of motor vehicles, linked by staircases and steep cobbled footpaths.
