If you are in search of something sandier you can head east to Casteldaccia or west to the long, quiet stretch of coast by Campofelice di Roccella. Beyond this is the sumptuous Cefalù, with its Medieval old town and UNESCO-protected cathedral.

If you want to explore the island's urban life, a little over 40 minutes will bring you into Palermo, a huge, resurgent metropolis and Italy's fifth-largest city. Whether you want world class opera, international boutiques and fine dining, or street food, bustling markets and a passionately supported football club, there is something for you here. From the calm silence of Casa Ilona, however, the bustle of modern life feels half a world away.
