Description
Description
Trehaverock was built in the 15th c. as a home for clergy attached to the parish church. Later in its history it was an alehouse called The Gray’s Arms, implicated in legends of smuggling from Port Quin, but it was still owned by the church when sold in 1967 to the family who is selling the property now.
The historic aspects of the house remain largely intact: massively thick stone walls, Delabole slate roof and flagstone floors, beamed ceilings, quirkily placed windows, a wide chimney breast, and ancient stone outhouses, set in a level garden.
In the 1970s the single storey, attached, stone barn was converted to be the kitchen, which it still is, with space for a large central table, fitted units and a recently converted electric Aga. It is entered from the front through a glazed porch and a stable door opens to the rear garden.
The sitting room has all the homely features one would expect in such an old house, as listed above, and is dual aspect to the west and the east gardens with wide window seats to enjoy the views. The deep set hearth and low beamed ceiling lend cosiness to the room.
The front door opens from a slate roofed porch into a hall off which is a reception room (currently used as double bedroom) open to a back kitchen/utility and a wet room and wc, which is next to the external door to the rear garden.
A very quaint staircase has natural light borrowed in a novel arrangement from one of the bedrooms. There are three double bedrooms along the west facing front of the house, all with replaced windows and with lovely views directly across to the church. A bathroom overlooks the rear garden.
A corrugated roofed veranda extends from the stable door to the back kitchen, looking onto the lawned garden and orchard.
A wooden gate opens to the front drive and extensive gravelled parking area, while a pedestrian gate opens to the lawn and front porch.
Mature shrubs and level lawns make this a relatively easy garden to maintain. A stone outhouse that was once a piggery is in the corner of the orchard. Two more stone barns are at the front, both of a useful size for a small boat or garden machinery storage.
