Description
The Tour
The building is set back from the street and accessed via a courtyard, with lift and stairs access to this apartment’s second-floor entrance.
From here is a hallway with a direct sightline across the plan. Solid oak floorboards extend underfoot and continue throughout the apartment.
Opening out at one end is the open-plan kitchen, living and dining room. The room has high ceilings and stretches the width of the apartment. On one side is the kitchen, with its plywood cabinetry and double Belfast sink. There is also a four-ring induction hob, an integrated oven and microwave, and a central island topped with striking Oyster Quartz. The remainder of the room is versatile, with space for both living and dining areas.
The peaceful primary bedroom is at the rear of the plan, oriented towards the building’s central courtyard. Crittall-style glazed doors to the hallway draw in additional natural light. A large built-in wardrobe with sage-painted doors runs along one side, and built-in drawers and laundry baskets are on the other.
On the other side of the hall is an additional room with crisp white walls and matching built-in storage. It would make for a brilliant home study, and there is a fitted pull-down bed.
The bathroom is fitted with a walk-in shower and an egg-shaped bathtub. Striking charcoal-coloured tiles line the walls and floor, and a wash basin is framed with dark geometric tiles. The bathroom is fitted with underfloor heating.
The Area
Royal Oak Yard branches off Bermondsey Street, a popular part of south-east London. It is home to a remarkable array of places to eat, including Comptoir Gourmand, The Giddy Grocer, The Watch House, José and Pizzaro. Michelin-starred restaurants Sollip, Story and Trivet are a short walk away in London Bridge, in an area that was once known as ‘London’s larder’.
Maltby Street Market runs alongside railway arches and has a range of dining options, along with the natural wine bar 40 Maltby Street. Druid Street, to the north of the arches, has craft breweries and a bakery/wine shop by St. John. Borough Market is around a 15-minute walk away and houses some of London’s finest traders of fruit, vegetables and fresh produce; Monmouth Coffee, Ginger Pig and Padella are stalwarts.
Many of London’s most illustrious cultural institutions are also readily available, including White Cube and the Fashion and Textile Museum, both of which are on the Royal Oak Yard's doorstep. Tate Modern, Southbank Centre and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre are all within a 30-minute walk.
There are free public tennis courts in Tanner Street Park, also home to the French restaurant Pique-Nique, set in the park's former pavilion.
London Bridge station is around a 15-minute walk away and runs Northern and Jubilee Underground lines and National Rail services nationwide, including direct routes to Gatwick Airport. Bermondsey station is a 20-minute walk away and runs Jubilee line services. The city is a 20-minute walk across London Bridge.
