In the 16th century, threatening ruin, it was demolished (1568), and the construction of a new temple began, on the initiative of the bishop of Lamego . An image of the Virgin and Child was deposited in the new hermitage. Over time, devotion to Saint Stephen diminished, being replaced by devotion to the Virgin. The devotion of those who turned to her in search of relief from illnesses gave rise, in turn, to devotion to Our Lady of Remedies.The current sanctuary was begun in 1750 and completed only in 1905.This ancient city has around 24,000 inhabitants (2021 census), with its main activities centered on services, commerce and agriculture. The latter represents an important source of wealth, coming mainly from the wine sector, since the municipality, like the other municipalities in the region, is integrated into the Douro Demarcated Region.
