Description

INTRODUCTION

Where countryside charm meets refined elegance. This beautifully converted barn, originally transformed in the late 1980s and extensively reconfigured around 10 years ago, combines timeless character with modern luxury. Every detail has been carefully considered, from its family-friendly layout to the high-quality finishes throughout.

Highlights include solid Dartmoor wood flooring, exposed oak beams, and striking stone walls, all tastefully styled to create a warm yet sophisticated home. With versatile living spaces, a private garden enjoying rolling countryside views and an expansive summerhouse for additional accommodation, the property offers both comfort and grandeur.

Perfectly positioned to enjoy the best of rural community living while remaining close to amenities, this exceptional home is ready to move into and offers the ultimate blend of country lifestyle and contemporary luxury.

STEP INSIDE

The property opens on the ground floor with a practical utility space, with slate flooring and a stable style door opening onto the garden plus a double garage. An inner hallway leads to bedrooms 3,4 & 5 with a shared bathroom, offering excellent privacy for multi-generational living or visiting guests— a design feature the current family found invaluable.

Ascending to the first floor, passing handmade spindles on the staircase, you are immediately struck by the sense of space and character in the living room. Vaulted ceilings, exposed oak beams and stone walls create a dramatic yet welcoming setting. This is a wonderfully social space, enhanced by tasteful lighting and a feature wood burner, perfect for cosy evenings. Doors with wooden shutters open directly onto a suntrap garden, ideal for entertaining or simply enjoying the peaceful countryside views.

The stunning kitchen/dining room is designed for both everyday living and entertaining, it features a breakfast bar for informal meals alongside a formal dining area. High-quality fittings include solid wooden tops, a butler sink, wine cooler and integrated dishwasher. An exposed stone wall frames the Juliet balcony, while an adjacent study provides a quiet retreat for work or reading. Twin staircases lead from this level to the main and guest bedroom suites, cleverly positioned in separate wings of the barn for privacy.

SELLERS INSIGHT

“We were instantly drawn to the location, the charm of the building, and its history. We wanted to feel immersed in the countryside yet still be close to amenities — a local pub, a train station, and somewhere nearby for our horses. In 2009, after much searching, we found this community. The village has a wonderful spirit, with regular social events such as the annual ‘IppleTipple’ fete, and we felt immediately at home.

We lived here for several years before making any changes, taking the time to understand the house so we could make respectful improvements that suited our lifestyle. We wanted a home large enough for entertaining, which has always been an important part of our lives, but also a layout that gave our children independence as they grew up.

One of the biggest transformations was uncovering a whole floor of the house, which became the main and guest bedroom suites. We relocated the kitchen and doubled the size of the living room, ensuring there was space for family gatherings and parties, yet retaining the character and original features. Our girls affectionately called the ground floor their ‘apartment,’ and we still have the sign saying ‘girls apartment’ today.

The living room has truly been the heart of our home — always alive with the sound of the piano, music through the built-in system, and the happy buzz of people, children, and celebrations. It’s an open, versatile space but always warm and full of love.

What we’ll miss most is the peace and quiet of the location, the mesmerising views, and the feeling of safety that comes from being part of a community while still enjoying privacy. The summerhouse, which we built in 2013, has been a true sanctuary and an extension of our living space, where we’ve created wonderful memories with friends and family.

We will miss our neighbours, the social spirit of the village, and, most of all, waking up to the view. This home has been our sanctuary — but now that our children have grown up and moved on, it’s time for us to do the same.”

The principal bedroom suite is a true sanctuary that benefits from views of the rolling countryside, complete with generous proportions, bespoke fitted wardrobes, velux windows and a luxurious ensuite bathroom with both bath and shower. Adding to the indulgence is a private sauna — the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day. The guest suite offers another spacious double bedroom with its own stylish ensuite, ensuring comfort and privacy for family or visitors.

STEP OUTSIDE

The south-facing terrace is the perfect spot to soak up the sunshine, with steps leading past a feature pond to a beautifully landscaped lawn, enclosed by sleepers and thoughtfully divided into distinct areas. Further steps descend to a private patio — an ideal retreat for quiet moments, where the only sound is birdsong. At the bottom of the garden sits an exceptional summerhouse, designed as the ultimate entertaining/well-being space. This impressive structure features a reception area with a bar reclaimed from a public house in Bishopsteignton, ideal for parties or for dispensing hot/cold beverages. Archways lead into an additional living area and the hot tub room, and striking ceiling lines add character throughout. Whether used for entertainment, a gym/well-being centre, a home office, or simply relaxing with family, it is a versatile space surrounded by open countryside.
