Description
Listed Grade II, Stapler’s House is thought to date from the first half of the 17th century, with possible earlier origins. It has a handsome ashlar stone façade with mullioned windows, moulded dripstones, and two tall gabled dormers. Internally, it has been well restored and modernised, incorporating contemporary fittings whilst retaining the purity of its historic, architectural style. The Tudor-arched front door opens into a central hall with exposed timber studding. To the right, the drawing room features an inglenook fireplace and an original flagstone floor with stone window seats. To the left, the dining room also has an inglenook fireplace, a stone-flagged floor, and a window seat, with the staircase leading to the first floor. The sitting room is a particularly cosy space with a Cotswold stone fireplace, access to rear terrace, and traditional flagstones. The flagstone flooring continues into the kitchen/breakfast room, a Martin Moore design, with steps up to the utility including washing machine and drier and WC. On the first floor, there is a wonderful landing/sitting room with exposed timbers, a window seat, and a Tudor-arched fireplace with a charming, raised grate and a Robert Thompson carved mantle piece. The principal bedroom also features a fine Tudor fireplace. From the landing, steps lead up to a rear wing housing a beautifully fitted bathroom with a roll-top bath, contemporary wash basin, WC, and shower cubicle. Fired Earth tiles and heated flooring. A further double bedroom is also found on this floor. The second floor provides two interconnecting double bedrooms, one currently used as an office, the other incorporating a WC and wash hand basin.
In the tranquil garden to the rear one would hardly know that the house fronts onto the High Street. There are two terraces, the first with well-established wisteria, David Austin rose, and other shrubs, the second providing a sunny eating area from which steps lead up onto the lawn and to the garden shed and additional terrace at the rear. There is a lovely view of the church tower.
Chipping Campden is one of the most beautiful and historic of all the Cotswold market towns. It lies in a fold of the Cotswold Hills in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty approximately 12 miles to the South East of Stratford-upon-Avon and 22 miles North of Cheltenham. The town is well known for its traditional Cotswold architecture, much of it dating back to the Middle Ages. There is a good range of shops catering for most everyday needs as well as a number of specialist suppliers, a library, schools and a doctor’s surgery. Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon are the main shopping and cultural centres for the region. The surrounding countryside offers many excellent walks and rides and there are ample sporting opportunities. There is a mainline station to London from Moreton-in-Marsh (about 8 miles) and most West Midland centres are within daily commuting distance.
