Description
Description
Ivy House was owned by the Hart family for three generations from 1902. Mr. Hart, a skilled silversmith, was invited to Chipping Campden by the renowned architect G.R. Ashbee. As a member of the Guild of Handicraft - co-founded by Ashbee and William Morris - Hart contributed to the flourishing Arts and Crafts movement in the North Cotswolds.
When Ashbee relocated the Guild to Chipping Campden in 1902, he brought with him a philosophy rooted in craftsmanship, natural materials, and architectural harmony. His influence spread throughout the North Cotswolds, where he designed and restored homes and workshops with a deep reverence for beauty and utility. One of his signature creations is the graceful curved staircase in Ivy House—a striking example of his belief that everyday objects should be both functional and artful.
A subtle yet symbolic detail in Ashbee’s work is the rose motif, rich in layers of symbolism and aesthetic significance. At Ivy House, this motif is delicately woven into the staircase design, serving as both ornament and signature—a quiet testament to Ashbee’s vision of unity between art and life. Upstairs, the front room continues this artistic narrative. The door frames feature circular and crest motifs, echoed in two of the room’s shutters, adding a layer of thoughtful detail that reflects the house’s rich heritage.
The grand staircase, adorned with elegant panelled detailing, rises gracefully from the entrance hall to the first floor. A striking stained glass door opens directly onto the courtyard and garden. More than just an architectural feature, this door beautifully frames the view beyond, enhancing the sense of openness and light as you approach the entrance.
The drawing room is elegant and filled with natural light, featuring a magnificent bow window, ornate coving, and a marble open fireplace that adds warmth and grandeur. The sitting room offers a cosy and stylish retreat, centred around a Cotswold stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove. A large window with working shutters brings in abundant natural light. One of two studies, located off the main hall, overlooks the courtyard and was formerly used as a library, offering a peaceful space for work or relaxation. The dining room, adjacent to the kitchen, features a charming flagstone floor, a window with courtyard views, and a beautifully detailed panelled wall with hidden storage.
The kitchen blends modern convenience with timeless charm, centred around a four-oven Aga beneath a stone lintel. It includes exposed beams, a high ceiling, and direct garden access. The second study, located at the front of the house, is private and tranquil, ideal for focused work. It includes a unique fireplace available by separate negotiation. The scullery is a practical space for laundry or additional cooking, with fitted units, a Butler’s sink, and a flagstone floor.
The principal bedroom is spacious and light-filled, with built-in cupboards and an updated en suite featuring a bath, shower, and freestanding vanity unit. A separate cloakroom includes a WC and wash hand basin, ideal for use with the nearby bedroom. Bedroom 5 is a charming single room with a built-in cupboard, wash hand basin, and garden views. Bedroom 2 is bright and generously sized, with a large window and a wash hand basin for added convenience. Bedroom 3 is spacious and airy, with front-facing views and an en suite Jack and Jill bathroom shared with another room.
