Description
The property
3 Mitchell Cottages This attached property has origins that date back to the early 17th century, and is Grade II Listed as being of architectural interest. It is traditionally built with rendered and colourwashed exterior elevations under a slated roof, and has attractive small pane and some stone mullion windows with leaded lights. Formerly a farmhouse which was divided many years ago, 3 Mitchell Cottages the easterly portion and consequently has the spacious rooms that one would expect with a farmhouse and not a cottage.
The property has been the subject of much improvement over the years and these works have been completed thoughtfully and sympathetically, for example with the use of clay-based paints. The property combines character features such as window seats, exposed timbers, flagstone flooring and two splendid inglenook fireplaces with the comforts of modern living; most recently with the addition of a fabulous shower room to the ground floor.
The second reception room, which was converted from the Forge itself, is a great asset to the property. This excellent, vaulted space could offers a number of uses including a 4th bedroom, games room, studio or similar and could easily be used quite separately from the main property with the added benefit of having its own exterior access in place.
Outside
To the front is a pretty and enclosed garden stocked with mature borders. To the rear is a level, square and sunny garden which is enclosed with a splendid mature Willow tree providing dappled shade. There is also a useful storage shed and immediately behind the house is a gravelled courtyard area with central brick circular feature. The property also has a right of way to a parking area at the front with space to park two vehicles.
Location
3 Mitchell Cottages is situated in the heart of the tiny Conservation Village of Gittisham within easy walk of the Grade I Listed St Michaels Church, Village Hall, and the renowned Pig at Combe country hotel and restaurant. The village has a number of notable and historic connections with Tom Putt of apple fame, and Joanna Southcott who was a self described religious prophetess who was born in 1750. The village is located in some of East Devon's most attractive countryside and yet is only 2.75 miles from the bustling market town of Honiton which has a main line Railway Station with direct trains to Waterloo. About 16 miles to the west is the City of Exeter which is also the County Town of Devon. The Jurassic Coast at Lyme Bay and World Heritage Site lies some 10 miles to the south.
