La Palmyre
La Palmyre is a seaside resort town (station balnéaire) in the commune of Les Mathes, in the département Charente-Maritime
It lies on the Presqu'île d'Arvert, between the ocean (Atlantic) and natural features like the forest of La Coubre, plus marshes and the estuary of the Gironde
Population is small in winter (~1,800 in Les Mathes/La Palmyre), but swells greatly in summer (many tens of thousands) due to tourism.
Main Attractions & What to Do
Zoo de La Palmyre
One of the biggest draws: founded in 1966 by Claude Caillé.
Covers ~18 hectares in a pine forest, with ~1,600 animals from ~110-145 species
Open year-round, with shows (sea lions, birds) during the warmer months
Also involved in conservation and breeding programs for endangered species
Beaches & Coastline
Long sandy beaches ideal for families (gentle slopes into the water), plus more wild surf beaches on the "Côte Sauvage
The beach known as Plage de la Palmyre (or Plage du Clapet) is close to the town & port, accessible, with amenities, and good for swimming and relaxing
Forest of La Coubre
A large pine forest (domaniale) of several thousand hectares (approx. 8,000 ha in some sources) that borders La Palmyre. Offers many trails for walking, biking, horse riding
Serves as a natural buffer, dune stabilization etc.
Phare de la Coubre (Lighthouse)
Built in 1905, ~64 meters high, about 300 steps to climb. Great views over the Atlantic, the forest, and coastline.
There is also a smaller Phare de La Palmyre (older) but less prominent as a tourist viewpoint.
Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Pins
A chapel set in the pine woods, inaugurated in 1991. Modern design, quite open to surroundings, made of pine structure.
Outdoor / Leisure Activities
Lots of possibilities: cycling, paddle, surf, kite surf, horse riding, walks
There are cruise options or boat trips in nearby estuaries or between islands (e.g. toward Île d'Oléron etc.).
Other Amenities
A marina / port, shops, restaurants, holiday villages / campsites. Golf course.
