* Fairacre is unique - for those familiar with the Chislehurst environs, this house has always commanded - though in the quietest fashion - an outstanding renown. The house was built by William Willett to the design of Ernest Newton on land originally purchased in 1890 and formerly beIonging to Camden Place, the home of the exiled Napoleon III of France and Princess Eugenie and now the adjacent Chislehurst Golf Course. The original house was completed in 1896 but has since been extended, the principal accent falling upon the inclusion of the remarkable Derby Room completed in 1961. This room is understood to have been recreated from the original banqueting hall designed by Robert Adam in 1774 at The Oaks, an outstanding mansion in Carshalton owned by the I2th Earl of Derby. Tradition has it that The Derby as we now know it was ' born' here. It is little wonder, therefore, that Fairacre merits a Grade II listing as being of special architectural and historic interest.
* With the accommodation arranged over three floors plus a cellar this is not only a lovely home but a beautiful period house.
* Walking through the entrance porch into the entrance hall you are immediately in the heart of the house. Many rooms have Russian pine panelling and the drawing room is a particular delight with a lovely bay window overlooking the rear garden.
* The Derby room is truly impressive measuring over 35' in length and has windows on two facing walls, and a fine carved fireplace with marble hearth and pedimented chimney piece over flanked by two arched display recesses and fluted Corinthian columns and a concealed door to the servery.
* The spacious fitted kitchen/breakfast room and utility room lead through to the indoor swimming pool complex overlooking the York stone paved terrace to the rear.
* The first floor is approached via a fine wooden staircase with moulded handrail and turned balusters with panelled dado. The galleried landing gives access to the bedroom accommodation on the first floor including the master bedroom suite with dressing area with extensive fitted wardrobes and ensuite bathroom. There are four further double bedrooms, three of which overlook the formal gardens to the rear.
* The interior of the property is representative of craftsmanship of impeccable quality and style. Expressions of such excellence include an abundance of delicate plaster mouldings beautifully decorated by Paul Marciamdi and fireplaces supplied by Crowthers of Syon Lodge created in Italian marble, a number of which we are informed are also by Robert Adarn.
* The second floor has a further four rooms, one used as a art room and the other three currently are a gym, second office with balcony and a cinema room plus a nicely enclosed suite of rooms comprising reception room, two bedrooms, kitchen and a shower room which would make an ideal flat for staff or a relative.
* It seems almost natural, therefore, that Fairacre merits its own entry in Sir Nikolaus Pevsner's 'The Buildings of England' as being '...the first breath of a Georgian revival...'
Gardens and Outbuilding
* Garage to the side of the house with a door to the Inner lobby.
* To both the front and the rear of the property, there is an atmosphere of tranquillity coupled with a recurring element of the unexpected. Sympathetic landscaping has avoided excessive formality by preferring a miscellany of winding paths, hidden retreats and outbuildings. Planned precision is most evident in the yorkstone terrace and stone bridge spanning an ornamental pond before the spreading lawns and beyond. Out of sight of the house, the far side of a delightful laburnum avenue, the walled vegetable garden and high lawn are perhaps the most private parts of the grounds, and a replica of a village inn complete with bar and open fireplace overlooks the recently resurfaced hard tennis court. To the front, the grounds slope gently down towards Camden Park Road, which is almost completely obscured by an array of mature trees.
Location
* As to location, Camden Park Road is ideal for so many being a quiet private road bordering Chislehurst Golf Course and with access of Chislehurst Station with fast trains to London Bridge and Charing Cross from 16 and 26 minutes respectively. Nearby Bromley South Station is 17 minutes from Victoria.
* Chislehurst High Street with its variety of shops and restaurants is under a mile away and major centres of Bromley (3 miles) and Bluewater Shopping Centre (13) miles both provide excellent ranges of shopping, schooling and recreational facilities.
* The M25 is 8 miles to the south providing easy access to the Bluewater Shopping Centre, Dartford River Crossing, Gatwick and Heathrow airports and on to the continent via the Channel Tunnel, via the M20. Canary Wharf is 10 miles to the north as the crow flies.
