The district has independent shops, pavement cafés and restaurants, as well as galleries & a diverse mix of cultural activity.
History
48 The Close is one of a pair of three storey brick-built houses (along with No 47) dating from the eighteenth century. Architectural details include doorways with fluted pilasters and plain architraves and blind window recesses which add to the symmetry of the design. The house lies on Hook's Walk which has medieval origins forming the access route from the Monastic Inner Court to what were the vineyards, orchards and gardens of the Great Garden of the Outer Court, now known as Gooseberry Gardens.
Documentary records refer to an Edmund Spendlove having tenure of the site in 1649. In 1680 it is referred to as part of Rolfe's Tenament. In the early 1800's the lease was held by a tailor named William Gell Turner - a carved stone with the letters "WGT" is set in a plaque on the rear wall of the properties.
