Description
Description
Constructed in 2012, the property was designed by the award-winning architect, Fiona McLean, to take full advantage of its stunning setting, combining traditional materials with Passivhaus principles to create this truly unique coastal home.
Inside, there is a large porch and a separate utility room for storing everything from surfboards and wetsuits to walking boots and picnic hampers. The extensive open plan kitchen, dining and living area has incredible dual aspect sea views from large glass sliding doors on both sides, which also give access to the garden.
The kitchen has a central island with bar seating and is kitted out with a range of modern appliances. It is perfect for entertaining with a large dining table seating at least ten. There is a separate snug or games room for those wanting space to read a book or play a board game. The dedicated work space is on one side of the open plan kitchen and the walk-in larder is on the other.
Upstairs the principal bedroom suite occupies one side of the house, with a double height bedroom looking out over the sea, a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite bathroom with a rain shower and free standing bathtub. The main bedrooms on the other side of the house include two super kings, that look out over the water and the countryside, one has an en suite with a very special view from the bathtub.
The twin room and the bunk bed room both have lots of space and there is a further large family bathroom with a shower and bathtub. There are two further bedrooms and a spacious landing on the second floor.
Outside, The Eyrie is set in one of the most picturesque positions in North Devon, with extensive gardens and grounds laid out by the prestigious landscape architect, Todd Longstaffe Gowan, overlooking the surrounding coastline and out to sea. From the paved terraces on either side of the house you can sit and enjoy the beautiful sea views. Large areas of lawn and wildflower meadow give plenty of outside space, all shielded by mature trees and wild gorse, offering privacy and peace to relax.
The garden has a sunken fire pit area and there is a barbeque and pizza oven or just sit back and enjoy sundowners as the sun sets over the water. The garden has been home to owls, rabbits, badgers, deer, pheasants and occasionally the local sheep. Within the grounds, there is a detached double garage building.
Location
The Eyrie is set on the edge of the historic village of Mortehoe in North Devon, which has two pubs, a tea room, fish and chip shop and a village shop with post office. From the village you can walk out to the headland of Morte Point on the South West coast path and try spotting a seal or two.
Nearby is the beautiful sandy beach of Woolacombe, a surfers paradise, it has miles of space for picnics, walking, surfing, stand up paddle boarding and swimming. Out to sea is Lundy Island, home to seals and puffins, which can be visited daily from Ilfracombe during the season.
This part of North Devon is the first place in the UK to be selected as a World Surfing Reserve, and there are many hidden gems, including Barricane and Grunta beaches, that are on the way to Woolacombe. You can spend an evening enjoying an amazing Sri Lankan curry on Barricane beach or swim in the tidal rock pools on Grunta. The charming hamlet of Lee Bay is a few miles in the other direction towards lfracombe.
There is a good selection of local independent shops in the nearby villages, together with a primary school in Woolacombe. Secondary schools are situated in Ilfracombe and Braunton, amongst others.
The regional town of Barnstaple is about 13 miles away and provides for most everyday needs, whilst the county towns of Taunton (Somerset) and Exeter (Devon) are about 62 and 55 miles respectively. There is a railway station in Barnstaple, and a mainline station by Junction 27 of the M5 at Tiverton, some 49 miles distant.
