Dalmellington is a small town in East Ayrshire, 50 miles (80 km) south west of Glasgow. Situated in the Doon Valley, Dalmellington stands at 600 ft above sea level and is scattered over a hillside. The town developed around textiles, the railway, ironworks, coal mining and afforestation and this attractive settlement is dominated by the attractive Kirk of the Covenant, which is located at the top of the village. The Doon Valley Museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the town (1744), explores the social and industrial heritage of the area and also boasts an art gallery. Loch Doon, near Dalmellington is the largest inland loch in southern Scotland, and the area around it gives great opportuities for walking and cycling as well as the Carrick Forest Drive.
