Cromarty:

After the decline of the herring industry and maritime trade that once brought prosperity, Cromarty entered the 20th century as a quiet fishing and agricultural town. Many of its traditional industries dwindled, and the population fell.
During both World Wars, the nearby Cromarty Firth served as a strategic naval base. The town and surrounding area saw military activity, including the construction of defences and the stationing of naval personnel. After the wars, Cromarty’s isolation grew, as major roads and the railway bypassed the town.

The 1970s brought change with the discovery of North Sea oil. The Cromarty Firth became a key area for oil-rig fabrication and marine engineering, which created jobs and renewed interest in the region. This period saw an influx of workers and new investment.
The 1980s further improved Cromarty’s fortunes with better transport links — the opening of the Kessock Bridge made the Black Isle and Cromarty much more accessible. Restoration of historic Georgian houses and cottages became a community priority, helping to preserve the town’s distinctive architecture.
By the 1990s, Cromarty was increasingly recognised for its heritage. The Cromarty Courthouse Museum opened as a centre for local history, and the town began to attract visitors for its charm, architecture, and coastal views.

In the 2000s and beyond, Cromarty evolved into a thriving heritage town. Tourism, arts, and culture became central to the local economy. The Cromarty Arts Trust fostered creative projects and festivals, while local businesses flourished around accommodation, food, and crafts.

Property values rose as the town became desirable for relocation and second homes. At the same time, the community remained active in preserving its character and supporting residents through local initiatives such as volunteer care projects.

Cromarty today faces a balance between prosperity and preservation — managing tourism, maintaining affordable housing, and protecting its historic harbour from the effects of coastal erosion and climate change. It stands as one of the best-preserved historic towns in the Highlands, combining traditional architecture with a strong modern community spirit.
