Description

Most impressive character residence enjoying a delightful coastal location with superb sea views.

Description

Peveril House is an imposing character residence, understood to have been built in the mid 19th century, having handsome elevations of local Purbeck stone under a tiled and slate roof. The elevations are enhanced by stone mullioned windows, and tall gable ends with decorative barge boards. The house offers well proportioned accommodation with generous room sizes and a wealth of character features including original fireplaces and ornate ceiling cornices. Of particular note are the delightful sea views across Swanage Bay that can be enjoyed from many of the rooms.

A pillared entrance porch and half glazed front door open into the entrance vestibule, and then into the bright and welcoming reception hall, with encaustic tiled floor, period style radiator, under stairs storage and the guest cloakroom. The double aspect drawing room has French doors to the garden and sea views, a fireplace with open grate, and wood flooring. The elegant dining room features twin bay windows both having French doors to the garden, an open fireplace with ornate marble fire surround, and pine floorboards. Leading from the inner hall is a small library/ study with book shelving, a fitted larder, and the secondary staircase. The kitchen/ breakfast room is fitted with an excellent range of custom-made painted wood units with granite surfaces, and has an electric Aga set into a tiled recess. Leading off is a spacious utility room with a range of matching units, and plumbing and space for washer and dryer. There is also a large boiler/ boot room and two useful store rooms.
A fine staircase with hardwood handrail leads up to the first floor landing. The two principal bedrooms enjoy excellent sea views. Also on this floor are two further bedrooms, the modern family bathroom with freestanding bath and marble topped washstand basin, and a separate WC. The staircase continues up to the second floor landing with useful storage, and three characterful double bedrooms, one a large studio type room ideal as a hobbies or games room. There is also a recently updated family bathroom with twin basins set into a marble topped washstand, a freestanding bath and separate walk in shower.

Outside
Peveril House is approached along a quiet and private unmade lane, with stone entrance pillars and a shingle driveway that opens out into a parking and turning area in front of the house. The most attractive gardens of around 0.9 acres wrap around the house with mature trees and shrubs providing seclusion. The gardens are mainly laid to lawn with a potential tennis or badminton lawn at the front. Extensive use has been made of the local Purbeck stone for garden walls and pathways that run around the house. A charming stone terrace and box parterre on the west side provide the perfect area for summer entertaining and from which to enjoy the sea views. There is a mature wisteria adjacent to the front door and many other specimen shrubs within the garden. There is a timber garage at the bottom of the drive.

Location

Peveril House occupies an incredibly secluded yet convenient location set along a private unmade lane adjacent to the clifftop and Peveril Point.

The South West Coastal Path runs along the cliff and leads to both the town centre and Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve, both about half a mile away.

The popular Victorian seaside town of Swanage is famous for its sandy beach and seafront, and offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars.

The Saxon market town of Wareham, approximately 10 miles away, also has a train station to London Waterloo.

The Isle of Purbeck, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty includes the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast with its unique geological formations such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, which starts at the stunning Studland Beach.

Poole Harbour, the second largest natural harbour in the world, is renowned for its sailing, watersports, marinas and yacht clubs, and the chain ferry across the harbour mouth connects to the famous Sandbanks peninsular.
