Description
Setting the Scene
Terrace Walk and its honey-coloured Bathstone buildings were largely constructed on the medieval city walls in the early 1700s, designed in part by John Wood the Elder, with some later adaptations during the Victorian and 20th centuries. The raised walkway became a fashionable promenade and a popular spot for social events. The area’s history stretches even further back, however, with the city’s Roman Baths and Abbey, which dates to the end of the 15th century, moments away. This multilayered history has contributed to Bath’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Grade II-listed Bath City Parade Gardens, first laid out in the 1730s, lie directly opposite. The park was designed as a pleasure garden for visitors (many of whom came to ‘take’ Bath’s waters) and to this day has a wonderful variety of trees, from limes, yews and sycamores to ornamental cherries.
The Grand Tour
Entry to this apartment is at street level, via a sweeping carpeted staircase. On the ground-floor level of the building is a commercial unit, also available by separate negotiation; more information is available on request.
This home, along with its neighbour, Terrace Walk II, has been exceptionally well renovated and recently completed. New Bosch kitchen appliances have been added, along with a fresh air ventilation system and double glazing, ensuring excellent heat and sound insulation.
The primary living areas, arranged in an open-plan layout, are orientated due south-east, with an expansive sash window inviting an exceptional quality of natural light throughout the course of the day. Along one side of the room is a bespoke kitchen in deep, forest-green, finished with dark-stained oak worktops. The layout of the room is versatile, with a broad cast-iron fireplace forming a characteristic period centrepiece.
The bedroom is at the rear, its beautiful panelled walls picked out in a powdery blue paint. Two windows here capture a breathtaking view out to the Abbey’s dramatic arched windows. There is built-in storage and a beautiful chestnut-brown tiled former fireplace. Soft carpet has been added underfoot, and there are newly fitted radiators beneath the windows.
Doors open to the bathroom from both the bedroom and the hallway. The adjoining bathroom is fitted with a bathtub and finished in chrome sanitaryware, and light-coloured tiles create a crisp feel.
Space for laundry facilities, complete with plumbing, has been discreetly built into a storage area near the entrance. There is also a Starlink connection running to the apartment.
Out and About
The apartment is brilliantly located in the heart of Bath, the only city in Britain to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status in its entirety. A wonderful array of independent restaurants, shops, bars and cafes on the doorstep. Local favourites include Landrace, The Sickle, Wolf Wine, Beckford Bottle Shop, and Colonna and Small’s.
The recently reimagined Shires Yard is a few minutes’ walk away and is host to an outpost of the popular independent vegetarian restaurant Root. The city’s cultural distractions are plentiful, with great theatres and galleries including the Holburne, the American Museum and the Fashion Museum. The Theatre Royal – one of the oldest working theatres in the country – is also close by, as is the ever-popular Komedia. For cinephiles, The Little Theatre and Everyman cinema is nearby.
There are numerous green spaces to explore nearby, from the Bath City Parade Gardens directly opposite, Henrietta Gardens just off Great Pultney Street, and Royal Victoria Park, a short walk away. In Alexandra Park, panoramic views across the city reward a steep climb, while the Bristol and Bath Railway Path traces the River Avon and is popular with both walkers and cyclists.
Bath Spa rail station is a six-minute walk from the apartment, with regular services to London Paddington in approximately an hour and 20 minutes, while Bristol is an 11-minute journey in the opposite direction. The M4 motorway sits just on the edge of the city centre, around 10 miles from the apartment.
