Description
The Building
Located in Zone 1, the development was conceived by architects Stiff & Trevillion and completed in 2015. It stands on the site of Maltina Bakery and flour mill in a quiet corner of Southwark. Quiet communal gardens belie its metropolitan location and are well-maintained and planted with a range of trees and bushes, alongside paved and lawned areas with raised beds.
The Tour
A shared entrance gives way to the apartment’s front door, which in turn leads to a spacious central hallway. Each room branches out from here, in a configuration that prioritises privacy in the bedrooms and light, space and garden views in the living areas.
The open-plan kitchen/living area is arranged in an L-shaped orientation. The living room takes a neutral palette, with textured earthy wallpaper and oak flooring. A large aluminium-framed window occupies the rear wall and elicits views of the well-kept gardens beyond.
Tucked around the corner, the kitchen is subtly demarcated from the rest of the room. Its appliances are integrated: there is a fridge-freezer and an electric oven with an induction hob atop. The area has plenty of room for dining and has direct access to the private terrace through glazed doors that also draw in plenty of light.
Both bedrooms are on the other side of the hallway; both have a fresh colour scheme and built-in storage. The principal also has an en suite shower room.
There is an additional shared bathroom off the main hall. A useful utility and coat cupboard is also tucked off the hall for ease.
There is air conditioning throughout the apartment, as well as an MVHR system.
Outdoor Space
Directly accessed from the kitchen, the apartment’s private paved terrace has restorative green views over the building's shared gardens. It is bound by a wrought-iron fence and has plenty of room for seating and for potted herbs and plants. From here, there is direct access to the development's tranquil landscaped gardens beyond.
The Area
Many of London’s most celebrated cultural highlights are walkable from the apartment, with the Old Vic, Young Vic, National Theatre, Shakespear’s Globe and The Bridge theatres all within walking distance. For galleries and museums, Tate Modern and The Hayward Gallery – two of London’s most revered public art institutions are a 13-minute and 17-minute walk respectively. The Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank runs a diverse programme of live music and cultural events throughout the year, while the BFI is home to one of the most important film and TV collections in the world.
The Cut is just around the corner and home to many convenient local amenities, as well as popular restaurants The Anchor and Hope, Ristorante Olivelli and Meson Don Felipe. Traditional pub The Kings Arms is very much in keeping with its Victorian setting and is a short stroll away. There are some lovely independent shops on Lower Marsh, of note are Lower, Greensmiths, and Little Bread Peddlar. Other excellent restaurants and bars can be found nearby, with Flat Iron Square, Maltby Street Market and Borough Market all within walking distance. We've written more about our recommendations in the area in our Journal.
For those seeking greenery, the grounds of the Imperial War Museum have lovely spaces to sit on the lawn beneath shady trees. The River Thames is a short stroll away and the Thames Walk heads towards green spaces on the banks along the river.
Transport connections from Valentine Place are second to none, with Southwark Underground (Jubilee Line) a four-minute walk from the apartment, and Waterloo station a six-minute walk for extensive National Rail services and access to the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Waterloo and City lines.
