The House & Lifestyle
If you're not quite ready to leave the fast-paced thrill of city life behind, but you also long for a quiet, peaceful place to come home to, Hertford offers the best of both worlds. A town with a real sense of community, it carries the energy of the city without the intensity, and the calm of the countryside without the compromise.
Just a stone's throw from Hertford's vibrant town centre sits Carriage Court, formerly the iconic coachworks and showrooms of Henry McMullen.
Set behind private gates, across a central courtyard, the architecturally impressive mews homes are defined by floor-to-ceiling glazing, vaulted ceilings and exposed steel beams. The result is a home filled with natural light, space and character, with a strong sense of privacy and calm once inside.
This is an upside-down house, designed to make the most of light and volume. The open-plan living, dining and kitchen space sits on the upper floor and works beautifully for hosting, entertaining, cooking and unwinding. The home feels warm and cosy in winter, while integrated air conditioning keeps it comfortably cool during the warmer months.
The current owners have lived here for almost seven years, having moved out of London in search of more space and a better pace of life. Hertford quickly became home, thanks to its excellent coffee shops, pubs, bars and restaurants, the theatre and cinema, recently transformed following a £30m renovation, and the many riverside walks on the doorstep. They moved in ready to entertain and host friends, and are now leaving as a small family, having truly made the most of the lifestyle this home offers.
In one direction, you are just a few minutes' walk from the town centre. In the other, Hertford North station is equally close, offering direct links to Finsbury Park in around 37 minutes, with easy onward travel to Oxford Circus, as well as services to Moorgate in approximately 51 minutes. Hertford East station is also within easy reach, around 0.6 miles away, with connections to Tottenham Hale and London Liverpool Street.
Carriage Court sits moments from the heart of Hertford, a charming market town known for its pretty streets, historic architecture and generous green spaces. There is an excellent mix of independent shops and high-street favourites, alongside a weekly market offering locally sourced produce every Saturday.
Spend summer evenings by the river, or settle into a cosy pub like The Old Cross when the weather turns cooler. It's easy to find your local here, and even easier to feel part of the community.
"Settle in a home that offers the best of both worlds."
History of the Coachworks
The homes at Carriage Court occupy the site of a former Baptist Chapel and the historic Coach and Carriage Works once owned by Henry McMullen, a name deeply rooted in Hertford's history.
The McMullen family are the owners of Hertford Brewery, still operating today from the centre of town and supplying pubs across Hertfordshire and beyond.
During the 1800s, carts and carriages were built here and displayed in first-floor showroom windows to catch the attention of passing gentry. The site has since been carefully converted and restored, with several homes retaining the original Georgian exterior features. Inside, subtle details remain, including elements of original woodwork from the former chapel.
