Description
Description
A masterful architectural rarity in the prestigious Greenwich setting.
Situated along one of Greenwich's most sought after and tranquil residential roads, this exceptional four-bedroom detached Grade II Listed residence represents a rare opportunity to acquire a true architectural gem. The Diamond terrace road is a exclusive private unadopted road
Designed and built in 1963 by renowned architect Julian Sofaer, the property showcases thoughtful design, character, and timeless appeal. Set within beautifully landscaped gardens and approached via a grand driveway, the home immediately impresses with its scale, privacy, and striking presence.
The garden hosts a entrance to a rare network of sand tunnels that are entered via a brick staircase and contain a number of sections that allow you to walk through and view the numerous murals and sand sculptures that have been engraved over the centuries. The tunnels are of historical importance and a place of shelter in the second World War, these have been surveyed by interested historical groups; Blackheath is famous for these type of tunnel construction and these are an outstanding example.
Extending to approximately 2,630 sq ft of living accommodation, the property offers generous and versatile space throughout. The bridge connecting the two parts of the property leads to a bright and spacious dining area, where expansive windows frame picturesque views of the surrounding gardens. A separate kitchen and breakfast area provide further practicality for family living.
The principal reception room features distinctive character elements such as timber redwood roof beams that enhance the home’s architectural integrity. This level also comprises four well-proportioned bedrooms and a family bathroom suite.
The lower ground floor offers additional flexibility, featuring an integral garage, which also offers a guest w.c. and a secondary reception room or study — ideal for home working or multi-generational living.
The beautifully maintained extensive wrap around garden provides access to a private walkway connecting conveniently to Westgrove Lane, adding both practicality and a sense of seclusion.
Meridian West, a grade II listed building, was designed by Julian Sofaer 1963-1965
Meridian West is his only private home and because of this is an exceptionally rare example of modernist domestic architecture. Sofaer's attention to the materials used and the play between inside and outside space is very reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wrights 'Falling Waters", an American icon which was very much in the minds of that generation in the 50s and 60s. He combines simplicity with privacy and the building enjoys uninterrupted views of the large encompassing garden and is not overlooked. The abundant built in storage and access to underneath the floorboard and overhead, all over the house, will mean any additional infrastructure can be installed without affecting the aesthetic of the building.
The building was extended by the late Ian Morton Wright ARIBA who trained at Regents Street Polytechnic. A locally renowned architect designing in the 50s - 1990s, he worked on residential projects and churches in South East London. His extension is in keeping with the original design and allowed for three extra bedrooms, an extra bathroom with options for a self contained flat, with infrastructure for drainage for an extra kitchen if required.
He also widened the envelope at the front and back of the house encasing the stairs and dug out his office (entrance left) as part of his development of the house. Buyers will see that the fabric of the building is still in very good condition, having been tended well.
