Description
Setting the Scene
This cottage sits within the Roehampton Village conservation area. The area became more developed in the 18th century, when it became a popular place to live following the opening of Putney Bridge in 1729.
It is thought that the cottages on Medfield Street were built in the 1860s, and provided accommodation for working-class people. This home bears many hallmarks of Victorian architecture, including red brickwork detailing and large sash windows.
The Grand Tour
A pretty garden brimming with a variety of shrubs and greenery sits in front of the house. Entry is to a peaceful sitting room, suffused with light from a timber-framed sash window. An expansive kitchen sits to the rear of the plan. Crittall-style doors unfold onto the garden, while additional light pours in through two large skylights. Light-blue cabinetry is topped with polished concrete work surfaces, and a brass splashback sits behind a Smeg oven with a gas hob.
A versatile space next to the kitchen is currently used as a home office, and has a fitted desk. In the guest WC, timber panelling has been washed in a midnight-blue tone.
The first floor is occupied by two bright double bedrooms, each with a sash window. The second bedroom is currently used as a dressing room and has bespoke integrated storage. A shared bathroom has a walk-in shower and a sink with a marble surround.
The Great Outdoors
A serene garden extends at the rear of the house, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor dining. Raised beds are filled with a variety of perennial plants, and there is a handy garden shed.
The front garden is home to a variety of colourful plants and foliage.
Out and About
Medfield Street is nestled between Richmond Park, Putney Heath, and Wimbledon Common, three of south-west London’s largest green spaces. The amenities of Roehampton Village are a few minutes’ walk from the house, while the ever-popular Chatka Franka deli and Roehampton Supermarket are just across the street. The Village Café is an excellent spot for brunch, while favourite pubs include the King’s Head Roehampton and The Telegraph on Putney Heath. A local library, a golf course, and a fitness centre are also nearby.
Putney High Street is a short cycle away, with an excellent selection of restaurants and cafés, including Tried and True, Home SW15, craft beer shop Ghost Whale and The Duke’s Head by Putney’s idyllic riverside. Wimbledon Village and Barnes are to the south and north respectively and are ideal settings for weekend strolls.
Well-regarded schooling options in the area include Heathmere Primary and Roehampton Church Forest School. There are several bus routes serving the area that provide easy access to nearby Putney and central London. Barnes rail station is a 10-minute cycle away, with services to Waterloo in around 20 minutes. Direct buses also give access to Barnes and Putney stations.
