Hatchford Park, first noted in the early 1700s, has had several distinguished owners, including Isabella Saltonstall, patron of artist George Stubbs. The Manor was rebuilt in 1889 for City stockbroker Walter Moresby Chinnery, who commissioned renowned Victorian architect Rowland Plumbe to create a Tudor style house inspired by Montacute House in Somerset.

In 1906, Sir Harry Samuelson Bt MP purchased the estate and added key garden features such as the Temple of Sleep, the mausoleum and the folly pavilions, inspired by Montacute. Between the Wars, Hatchford Park remained a grand residence under steel magnate William John Firth, who employed a large household staff, including seven gardeners.
