Located at 276 metres above sea level, the village of Bolognano is on a hill which overlooks the Orta Valley. The territory falls within the Valle dell-Orta Nature Reserve which is home to the prehistoric site of Grotta dei Piccioni. This is of particular interest to archealogists and geologists.

Bolognano has a population of 1,093 and is in a good position being equidistant to airport, coast and winter snow. The town has limited facilities including a post office and pharmacy. Nearby towns, which are about a 10 minutes- drive away, have shops, bars and restaurants.
