Description

This wonderful 1970s-built lateral home sits close to the beach in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. It was conceived by a local builder, who was inspired by the architectural styles he saw on a trip to Florida. Wide banks of glazing frame views across the garden, which stretches to just shy of an acre and is home to a separate studio and plenty of mature trees.

The Tour

A private, gravel-laid driveway sweeps up to Calluna’s long, low, and unmistakably mid-century profile. Entry is from the front to a bright glazed porch with a large original window. Throughout, an authentic feel has been preserved; period features remain in situ, including teak thresholds in all the doors.

On the right are the primary living spaces, subtly delineated from one another. A long window in the sitting room frames garden views, and a log-burning stove provides warmth on cool nights. A rich material palette has been used here, with museum parquet floors and Ketley bricks. Doors on one side open to a paved dining terrace.

Behind is the kitchen, which has cork floors and plywood cabinetry. Lime-green countertops provide a pop of colour. Opposite is plenty of space for a dining area next to a second set of doors to the garden.

The house has four peaceful double bedrooms, all with built-in storage and a crisp, gentle decorative scheme. The extended principal sits to the right of the living spaces, forming a private wing with its brilliantly finished en suite shower room. It also has a separate freestanding bath in the main sleeping space, where more glazed doors open to the garden.

The remaining bedrooms are in the left wing of the house. They share a shower room and a delightful separate bathroom, with terrazzo floors, low-level lighting and lime-green tiles that recall the zesty hue used in the kitchen.

Outdoor Space

Restorative gardens surround the house, amplifying its sense of privacy. Californian-inspired planting characterises the front, with succulents that erupt out of the gravel. There is also space to park several cars here.

There are lots of mature trees at the rear, including eucalyptus and firs. Daffodils grow in the spring, and pampas grasses wave in the coastal breezes.

The Area

Calluna lies in the Suffolk and Essex Coast and Heaths National Landscape, close to beautiful stretches of beach and restorative countryside walks. RSPB North Warren is to the east of the house, while Hazlewood Marshes is to the west.

The house sits on the quiet fringes of Aldeburgh, one of Suffolk’s most attractive coastal towns. It has a broad selection of independent shops, cafés and restaurants lining the high street. Popular haunt The Suffolk has a rooftop terrace overlooking the sea.

In addition to its proximity to the town and seafront, the house is close to the River Alde at Brick Dock and is well placed for walks along the old railway track to Thorpeness. Sailing facilities and a golf course are also within easy reach.

Snape Maltings, home of the internationally renowned Aldeburgh Music Festival, is under a 15-minute drive. The picturesque market town of Woodbridge, which has an excellent variety of places to eat and an independent cinema, is around 30 minutes drive to the west, with the popular Suffolk towns of Orford and Southwold also nearby.

For rail connections to London, Saxmundham railway station is approximately 15 minutes away by car, with direct services to Liverpool Street in a little over two hours.

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses.
