Description
Setting the Scene
The Camden Square conservation was laid out over fields as a planned development between the 1840s and 1880s. As a result, the Square is surrounded by elegant Victorian homes, largely built using London stock brick and with expressive stucco dressings.
This home has been masterfully transformed by its current owners, Duncan Campbell and Luke Edward Hall. Characterised by an eclectic approach that draws on a vast treasure trove of references, the interiors have been reinvigorated by sumptuous materials, spirited patterns and fine fittings and fixtures.
The Grand Tour
Set on the first floor, the apartment’s private front door opens to an entrance hall decorated with striking Papier Français wallpaper. A sensational classically inspired trompe l'œil mural created by Magda Gordon traces around the doorframes and doors, culminating in a larger piece covering the doors of a tall built-in cupboard.
Engineered timber boards have been laid underfoot throughout. The hallway continues towards the open-plan living space, a delightful room with two large arched sashes and rosy pink-painted walls. A bright red Plain English kitchen with a refined
Verde Marinace olive green granite worktop and a hand-painted Balineum tiled backsplash. Appliances include an integrated Zanussi fridge/freezer, a Bosch cooker and a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawer. The remainder of the room is versatile, with space for a dining table and a relaxing seating area.
Tucked around the corner is a sequestered study, a private spot to work with restorative green views. Glazed doors here open to the balcony and usher in plenty of light.
A joyful bedroom wrapped in 'À la Table du Roi' by Pierre Frey lies towards the home’s entrance. Maximal yet mellifluous, it pairs its botanical-themed walls with a leopard print carpet underfoot. Built-in shelves provide plenty of space for books and ceramics.
The bathroom has been approached with the same artistic hand as the rest of the home, with a bold but perfectly balanced combination of beautiful wallpaper ('Mongiardino Faux Marquetry' by San Patrignano), geometric tiles and a marble splashback behind a Burlington sink. The space is fitted with both a rolltop bath and a separate walk-in shower with a rain-style head.
The Great Outdoors
The elevated balcony at the front of the home faces south-west and is delightful throughout the day. It has room for a table and chairs as well as a potted city garden.
Out and About
Camden Square conservation area is a particularly beautiful part of London, located near Camden Town, Kentish Town and King's Cross. There are plenty of good pubs, coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance, including The Lord Stanley, which is just around the corner from the apartment, The Southampton Arms and The Pineapple.
There are some wonderful independents nearby, including Half-Cut Market on York Way, Bread by Bike, and deli Salvino. For pastries, Kossoff's in Kentish Town is brilliant and within easy reach for a weekend morning.
The Regent's Canal is also nearby and leads all the way to King's Cross and Granary Square, which has a host of wonderful restaurants. In the other direction, the Canal guides towards Angel and, beyond, the likes of London Fields and Victoria Park, as well as the inimitable waterside restaurant, Towpath.
The green spaces of Primrose Hill, Regent's Park and Hampstead Heath are all a walk/short cycle away, as well as Parliament Hill Lido. Caledonian Park is close by and is home to the remarkable Caledonian Clock Tower, a Grade II*-listed structure that stands as the only remnant of the mid-19th-century Metropolitan Cattle Market.
Public transport connections are excellent: Camden Overground and Camden Town station (Northern line) are both around a 10-minute walk from the apartment, while Euston, King’s Cross St Pancras and the Eurostar all take less than 20 minutes to reach on foot.
