Appledore - ppledore is 12 miles south of Ashford on high ground at the edge of the Romney marsh. Half way between Rye and Hythe it is a way point on the path that follows the Royal military canal which forms an inland border of the Romney and Walland Marshes. The canal was built as a defence in 1805 when England feared a Napoleonic Invasion .
Why Live in Appledore?
Surrounded by green and beautiful Kent countryside and is now 5 miles from the sea. It was formerly very different : a thriving port and fishing village on the estuary of the River Rother until the mid 1500, the people of Appledore had fought off invading Danish Vikings, and guarded the ships sailing up stream along the Rother to the Cinque port of Tenterden. Land reclamation of the Romney Marsh and silting up of the Rother together with dramatic storms in the 1200’s progressively distanced Appledore from the sea. Now it looks out across the valley of the Rother to the high ground that is the Isle of Oxney with its hamlets and farmsteads that also look out over the Marsh . To the north the village stretches out to the hamlet of Appledore Heath and the rolling escarpment of the Weald. Here is home of Gusbourne, one of Kent longest established vineyards and highly regarded internationally. Nearby is the large Hornes Place Barn and Oast – a luxury weekend holiday home: for getaways and celebrations in this heart of Kent’s historic countryside.
The Black Lion Pub is at the centre of the village on the Street . In medieval times this wide area was a regular and a chartered market linked to the port port. Today Appledore has a well run parish council and regular community events including the annual classic car show. Appledore’s railway station is a little way out of town where the line from Ashford crosses the marsh. Nearby are Tenterden and Rye to the west and Hamstreet to the east, all good for schools, shops, surgeries and places to eat.
