Description

A portion of a Grade II* listed Georgian country mansion with extensive parking, a detached double garage, and just over an acre of private garden with far reaching views over the adjoining countryside, Ampthill parkland, and the Greensand Ridge beyond. The Manor of Ampthill has history back to Henry III who granted a licence in 1219 to the Baronial family of Poinz for a market at their Manor of Ampthill. In 1524 Henry VIII acquired the estate which he used as a hunting lodge, and the castle on the site was used as a residence for Catherine of Aragon during her divorce. In 1661 Charles II granted the estate to John Ashburnham who was created Lord Ashburnham in 1698. He built the central section of the current mansion which has the stately characteristics of the Georgian period including the archetypal symmetry and tall shuttered sash windows. It has three storeys below a modillion cornice, and a tiled mansard roof with square dormers in the attics. In 1769 the estate was owned by the Earl of Upper Ossory who employed Sir William Chambers, the architect of Somerset House in London, to remodel the side wings which stand forward of the main block.
