Northhop has long been a sought after location among home buyers, and with good reason, as it has every facet that goes into making the archetypal village of our imagination.
OK, so there is a well stocked local shop and Post Office, two pubs - the best one almost opposite, a thriving village hall and of course the village cricket club where summer afternoons are punctuated by the sound of leather on willow, and for those special occasions, an up-market restaurant at the adjacent golf club...good grief, it's sounding more and more like Ambridge, but happily, this is real.
The High Street, where we find 'Westminster House', provides an eclectic mix of homes, in both size and type, from the imposing Plymouth House, the subject of a recent historical TV special, to the terrace of traditional cottages beside the pub. Commuting from here for those still labouring beneath the yoke of necessity is a simple matter with the A55 being almost on your doorstep and, with both Mold and Flint minutes away, you have all the advantages of village life with none of the inconvenience. If this fails to convince you, wait till you see the house...
This sandstone built semi** detached home lies in the part of the high street which widens out slightly, right in the centre of the village.
** Don't be alarmed when I say semi, this is a semi when they built houses properly, with solid walls! Not the modern plyboard walls of today where you can here your neighbours sneeze!
A small step leads up from the pavement to the attractive and reassuringly solid wooden front door, which in turn allows entry into the very spacious inner hallway with its striking Royal Minton floor tiles. This hallway is the ideal spot for housing outdoor clothing that may be wet and thus has no place further into the inner sanctum, and while you may expect to find a staircase in here, this has been moved elsewhere. There is no way of knowing when this occurred which is one of the idiosyncrasies of living in so old a building, but this only adds to the charm and keeps you in your place. After all, you may think you are the owner, but in reality you are merely the current custodian of a far greater story... At the far end of the hall where the stairs once were, is a large walk-in cupboard that's perfect for storing all the odds and ends that every home accumulates, but not being the prettiest of sights, needs to go somewhere.
That whole paragraph above was just for the hallway, so buckle in and grab a coffee or wine of you can because this could be a long, but very worthwhile, read.
Immediately on our right is the door into the lounge, which runs the full depth of the home that also incorporates a separate dining area to the rear. The first thing you notice on entering here is the large brick fireplace. Although presently appearing largely ornamental, the scorch marks on many of the bricks suggest that it is a working example and as such, is perfectly in keeping with the feel of the home. The fire adds to the cosy atmosphere that makes cottage living so special and the lounge, in spite of being part of a multi-purpose space, is plenty big enough to fulfil all of its duties.
Moving through into the dining room, we find somewhere perfectly able to contain what I would call a sensibly sized dining table. OK, you may struggle with a dozen guests at Christmas but then, if they are unhappy, the pub is just across the road (in case I haven't mentioned this)... Adding to the cosy and slightly bucolic atmosphere, there is a small log burning stove and in the alcove formed by its chimney breast, a space for a small office desk for those fortunate enough to be able to work from home. To the rear is an opening French window giving access to the charming enclosed rear garden and adding another dimension to the usability of the room.
From the dining room we pass into the kitchen, and this is where this home really begins to show its sheer class. In one corner of the room there is space for a table ideally suited for casual dining, when the formality of moving next door is just too much faff. The remainder of the room features fitted units to three walls, set out in a deep 'U' formation and giving masses of prep areas on their solid wood work tops. Cut into the work top beneath the window is a stylish and attractive Belfast sink, adjacent to the integrated dishwasher, while in the centre of the far wall sits an impressive range style cooker. The remaining units provide all the storage you could hope for, along with the integrated fridge/freezer.
Leaving the kitchen, along a short corridor we come firstly to the door into the utility room, somewhere that sounds a little unremarkable until you see it. Far bigger than I expected, it contains a series of fitted units for storage, a stainless steel sink unit and plumbed-in washing machine and tumble drier. Beside here is a lavatory and, running the full width of the room, a massive walk-in shower that's reminiscent of the scene in Dr. No, where Bond is decontaminated after being captured on the beach.
The corridor continues to the back door, a delightful wooden barn door from where we step onto the rear patio area. This is a continuation of the path running along the side of the home to the pavement at the front and provides plenty of space for decorative plants in various pots before a small step up takes us to the major part of the garden. This is a glorious and sheltered spot, redolent of Mediterranean al fresco dining while surrounded by various flowering shrubs, the only thing missing being a tight trousered Spanish waiter. To one side is a useful garden shed, in excellent condition and which could easily become a small workshop or conversion into a garden Bar....but there is a pub opposite here, so maybe just keep this as a garden shed.....I mean, how much do you all drink??
OK, now back indoors and up the stairs, which are found at the dining room end of the home, we come to the small landing. I say small because it is, but what would you rather have, a large landing or a small landing and large bedrooms.....my thoughts exactly!
We turn left into the first of the bedrooms, which unsurprisingly in a two bed home, is big. When I say big, I mean it puts to shame the majority of principal bedrooms found in modern houses but does so without ever feeling overwhelming. The wooden floor immediately gives it a warm and welcoming feel, while the view over the garden adds to the sense of serenity. There is room for the king sized bed with its pair of bedside cabinets, while still leaving space for an occasional armchair, and this is made possible by the two deep fitted hanging cupboards negating the need for additional free standing furniture.
At the head of the landing, we come to the bathroom, where the home's attention to detail and scant consideration to cost becomes ever more apparent, and why not?
If you want a bathroom, why not have one with a capital B and do the job properly? Tiled from its ceramic floor to the spotlight endowed white ceiling in marble effect ceramic, it is like walking into a Hollywood set, the only thing missing being a young Joan Collins peeping coquettishly out from beneath a mountain of sadly opaque bubbles. But fantasies aside, it contains all you could ask for and in real style. The suite comprises a unitary hand basin with storage drawers beneath, lavatory and a 'P' shaped bath, on the side of which is a folding glass screen preventing spray from any over-enthusiastic gymnastics in the shower mounted above, from going where it shouldn't.
And finally, we come to the principal bedroom, overlooking the front of the home. Actually, upon closer examination, it reveals that this is very little, if any, larger than the secondary bedroom. What sets it apart is the complete wall of fitted wardrobes, ensuring that the main characters living here can maintain an enviable level of sartorial choice when dressing to face the day. If that sounds a little Dickensian, it's just that sort of home, equipped with every modern convenience but filled with reminders of more formal times when style and things simply being done right mattered.
I found this home charming, and the way it mixes the old with the new, while retaining the best of both worlds, makes it a very special place indeed.

All in all this is a home so steeped in character you expect Mr Pickwick to knock on the door. Though were he to do so, he would be disorientated by the modernity he found inside, which is so obviously from another century, while still taking its styling cues from his own time. The extensive use of wood offers a beautiful and atmospheric solution in keeping with the rest of the home and the log burning stove completes the picture with an efficiency that belies its appearance. In short it manages to bring 21st century comfort into an 18th century setting, and does so with style. This is as close as you can get to living in a scene from the top of a chocolate box but with none of the expected disadvantages and that is a hard trick to pull off but this home does it with aplomb, so give Berry and George a call today, it'll be the best thing you do all day...unless you're a stuntman/woman, film star, racing driver etc, in which case, it'll be the 2nd best thing you do!
