Description

This immaculate two-bedroom apartment is spread over three floors on a quiet mews street in Bethnal Green. Interiors are illuminated by swathes of ribbon glazing, while ply joinery contributes to a serene material palette. A roof terrace on the top floor is perfect for sitting out, while the shops, bars and restaurants of Bethnal Green, Shoreditch and Hackney are all within easy reach.

The Tour

A shared entrance leads to the apartment’s private front door on the ground floor. Stairs rise to the main living space on the first floor, where wide ribbon glazing frames peaceful treetop views. Fitted oak cabinetry and shelving runs the length of one wall, perfect for displaying favourite objects. A wrought-iron balcony overlooking the stairs can be concealed with a sliding pocket door. The living area is warmed by under floor heating.

Across the hall lies a neat kitchen with oak veneer cabinetry and mocha stone HIMAC work surfaces. It has an Bosch oven and Smeg hob.

The principal bedroom is found on the ground floor. A wide panel of glazing is fitted with obscure glass, and bespoke oak veneer joinery includes floor-to-ceiling storage. A shower room has micro cement walls and flooring, Shou Sugi Ban cupboards and a walk-in shower with reeded glass panel. A bespoke fitted solid oak staircase with concealed storage leads to an additional bedroom, which occupies the top floor, and has access to a private roof terrace.

Outdoor Space

A Siberian Larch decked roof terrace has plenty of room for outdoor dining, and for growing potted herbs and plants.

The Area

The apartment is well situated for the best of Bethnal Green and the neighbouring locales, including Columbia Road, Broadway Market, London Fields, Wilton Way and Mare Street.

Nearby Hackney Road is home to an increasing number of popular restaurants and bars, including Morito, Sager + Wilde and The Marksman. Ozone Coffee specialises in excellent coffee, pastries and an ever-changing brunch menu.

Weaver’s Fields is a few minutes’ walk from the apartment, while Haggerston Park and London Fields are also within easy reach. Broadway and Columbia Road Markets, with their wide array of independent shops and cafés, are close by. Particularly popular are Climpson’s Coffee, Donlon Books, Pavilion Bakery, Brawn, The Royal Oak and Campania & Jones.

Liverpool Street is within walking distance, as are Brick Lane, Spitalfields Market, Redchurch Street and Shoreditch House. We've written more about our recommendations in Bethnal Green in our Journal.

Bethnal Green (Central line) Underground station is a 10-minute walk away, while Hoxton and Shoreditch High Street are both nearby for London Overground services. Whitechapel station is also in proximity and serves the District, Hammersmith & City and Elizabeth lines, as well as the Overground. Rail services are available from Cambridge Heath, and there are plenty of good bus routes close to the apartment.

About The Modern House, London

St Alphege Hall Kings Bench Street London SE1 0QX
Industry affiliations:

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses. Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced modernist architecture to a British audience.

We are excited by homes that pay attention to the timeless principles of modernism: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Combined, we believe design can be a powerful force for good.
