Description

The current owners have overseen a beautiful renovation of this two-bedroom Victorian apartment in Brockley's conservation area. New double-glazed sash windows and bespoke joinery have been added, and the original pine floorboards that run throughout were painstakingly restored. Hilly Fields is moments away, while the brilliance of Brockley (including its farmers’ market) is easily reached on foot.

Setting the Scene

Tyrwhitt Road is a peaceful residential street lined with handsome Victorian buildings. It was laid out in the 19th century, its name thought to be a nod to Robert Tyrwhitt, an 18th-century politician, academic and religious reformer. The road leads directly to Hilly Fields, arguably one of south-east London’s loveliest outdoor spaces. In the 19th century, locals successfully campaigned to preserve the park as open space during a period of large-scale residential development.

The Grand Tour

A powder-blue front door in the home’s charming frontage opens to a smart hallway, with monochromatic floor tiles underfoot. Stairs ascend to this home’s private front door.

Soothing and traditionally styled, the open-plan living room has a combination of soft sage-green and white-painted walls. On the sitting room side is a handsome fireplace framed by a stately original marble surround. Bespoke joinery has been added in either alcove, creating a space for books, board games, and the like.

The kitchen cabinets are also a gentle green shade and are topped with timber worktops. Appliances include a gas hob and an integrated electric oven. Next to the kitchen and in front of a large sash window, the current owners have arranged a dining spot with an atmospheric view over adjacent greenery.

There are two bedrooms, arranged at the other end of the hallway. Facing south-east, the principal receives a lovely natural light and has tall built-in wardrobes. The second room also has brilliant bespoke carpentry and is currently used as a study.

Timeless yet playful, the bathroom has double-aspect windows and triangle monochromatic floor tiles, a contemporary take on the traditional chequerboard style associated with homes of the period. It has a roll-top bathtub with a shower overhead.

Out and About

Tyrwhitt Road is positioned between Brockley and St Johns in south-east London. There are numerous cafes, restaurants and bars all within easy reach, including now-legendary Browns of Brockley coffee shop, Joyce natural wine bar and Mauby - a local cocktail bar with small plates, as well as a wide array of other options. Brockley Farmers’ Market runs nearby every Saturday.

Hilly Fields is less than two minutes from the house. As well as expansive green spaces and elevated views across the city, it has a café, playground, a nature reserve, and tennis and basketball courts. Brockley & Ladywell Cemetery, which spans 37 acres of beautiful green space, is also nearby.

St Johns station is at the end of the road and runs direct services to London Bridge (Jubilee and Northern lines) and Cannon Street (Circle and District lines). Brockley station is a short walk away and runs Windrush line services and direct Southern services to London Bridge in around 10 minutes.
