Description
You are close to three Zone 2 stations: New Cross (8 minutes), St Johns (10) and New Cross Gate (11) and you have many excellent bus routes to choose from, too. Brockley’s town centre (and its station) is just a 15 minute walk.
Your new pad takes the bottom floor of a flat-fronted Victorian terrace. Your own front door opens to a little handy tiled lobby, then your smart sash-windowed reception room is your first port of call. This has pale walls (the flat is neutrally decorated throughout) and some fitted wooden shelves to the alcoves for books/bits and bobs.
Two bedrooms and your contemporary windowed shower room are next on the tour. Your principal bedroom has a sash window. The smaller bedroom (which takes a double bed) has a double-glazed casement window, and a corner cupboard which tidily houses your combi-boiler.
Last but not least is your eat-in kitchen at the end of the hall. This has smart and timeless fitted units (including three double units to the alcoves) teamed with wooden counters and white square tiles with contrasting grouting. A double-glazed casement window delivers garden views, and a timber part-glazed back door opens out onto your gloriously private, low-maintenance shingled garden that is complete with shed and a wooden pergola.
The story doesn’t stop here… as a modest garden gate reveals a very large and lawned communal garden (shared with just three other properties). It is a welcome wonderful space to exercise, socialise with neighbours/BBQ, enjoy growing your own veggies/herbs, or just to chill with a good read and your sunscreen.
There is a genuine buzz about this area. You are set close to lots of south London hot spots (Brockley, Deptford, Greenwich, Peckham and Nunhead), with easy connectivity/commutes to Canary Wharf/City etc.
Central New Cross itself is a cool student town thanks to arty Goldsmiths University. The flat is minutes from the Uni campus, its historic buildings (like the former Deptford Town Hall building) and Will Alsop’s famous ‘Scribble’ sculpture.
Attached to the art department, Goldsmiths CCA is a fabulous tucked-away contemporary gallery: a Grade II listed building, designed by Turner Prize winners Assemble. Formerly a Victorian bathhouse, this quietly awesome local asset hosts exhibitions (from the international art community) within 700m² of gallery space. Lewisham Arthouse is also close for exhibitions from local art makers (and ‘affordable classes in ceramics, weaving, printmaking, music, and life drawing’).
Local pubs to you include The Talbot, The Wickham Arms and The Rose Inn.
Luxmore Gardens is a cute neighbourhood local park. For bigger open spaces, Telegraph Hill Parks are great. The Lower Park hosts a Saturday market (Brockley Market is a bigger Saturday one, held locally in Lewisham College car park heading east on Lewisham Way). Greenwich Royal Park is nice for a weekend stroll.
Heading west, Peckham and Camberwell are a short bus ride for more parks and social spots. Deptford is easily-walkable for bars, restaurants and cafes, and its long-running street market.
