Description

This wonderful five-bedroom, Grade II-listed house sits on coveted Stockwell Park Crescent. It spans around 2,800 sq ft of space across four storeys, with large sash windows and refined contemporary interventions. Built in the 19th century, the home was transformed by its architect owners as their family home, which it has served as for over 30 years. At its rear is a balcony, which descends to a thoughtful south-westerly garden with six graceful silver birch trees.

The Tour

Stone steps rise to an eggshell-blue front door on the raised ground floor. An expansive double reception room spans the length of the house, its high ceilings traced by intricate original cornicing and wooden floors bordered by tall, original skirting boards. A large window with shutters looks toward the street, while French doors to the rear unfold onto a balcony with steps down to the garden.

Across the hall, the kitchen has blue-and-glass-fronted cabinetry, stainless-steel work surfaces and sinks. Fitted joinery provides additional high-level storage space. On the other side of the room is space for a dining table and a long fitted plywood bench. Another glazed door provides access to the garden below.

The principal bedroom is on the first floor, illuminated by two 12-pane sash windows and with walls lined with bookshelves. A large en suite bathroom sits adjacent, with a bath, double sink and turquoise tiles. A separate shower room is tiled to match, this time with small, blue square tiles. There are also walk-in cupboards.

The second floor is home to three further bedrooms, each with a six-pane sash window and integrated storage. One of the rooms is currently used as a home office and is fitted with an L-shaped desk. A bathroom here is again finished with smart turquoise tiling.

On the lower ground floor are two versatile rooms used as studios. One looks toward the front of the house, while the other has a glazed door to the garden. The space can be divided by two sets of glazed pocket doors, and are linked by a hallway lined with bookshelves to create a library space. There is also a handy utility room and a shower room on this floor, and its own separate access.

An integrated garage provides dedicated wine storage, with more space provided by a substantial attic. There are solar panels which contribute to heating the hot water.

Outdoor Space

A generous and terraced front garden sits behind wrought-iron railings with an off-street parking space, and a small garage. To the rear of the house, a peaceful garden has brick and gravel areas and a pretty pond encouraging a diversity of wildlife. Each section is laid out in a grid and planted with a variety of plants, including rosemary and box, and has an automatic watering system. A paved area provides space for a long dining table. Above, a decked balcony provides elevated views of the rear garden.

The Area

Stockwell Park Crescent is one of the finest residential streets within the Stockwell Park Conservation Area. The crescent is a wonderfully peaceful enclave, with the calm green space of Slade Garden Park just behind. There is a warm and helpful Resident's Association which organises an array of events from a summer fair, open gardens and fireworks night, creating a lovely community.

Brixton, a lively area known for its excellent food and bar scene, is within easy reach, where Brixton Village, Market Row and Acre Lane are all highly recommended destinations. The Ritzy Cinema, Electric Brixton and Brixton O2 Academy are much-loved institutions. The Department Store is grand renovated 1876 Bon Marche building that now houses collaborative workspaces, a Pure Vinyl record shop, a community Post Office and Canova Hall restaurant and bar.

Stockwell Underground station is a 5-minute walk away, with the Northern and Victoria Lines providing quick access to central London. There are several buses that run into central London along Clapham and Brixton Roads.

Industry affiliations:

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses. Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced modernist architecture to a British audience.

We are excited by homes that pay attention to the timeless principles of modernism: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Combined, we believe design can be a powerful force for good.
