Description
Description
Lower Carwood is a rare sanctuary, set deep within the unspoilt countryside of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape and approached through an ancient woodland along a quiet, secluded track.
The cottage has grown organically over the years, retaining the authenticity of its original stone exterior while embracing warmth, comfort and a strong connection to the outdoors. The sitting room is a beautifully peaceful space with double oak doors leading onto the patio and gardens, quarry tiled flooring, exposed beams and built in shelving. A Clearview woodburning stove brings an inviting glow, and the room is filled with natural light throughout the day. A south facing sun room, constructed in oak and glass, provides a lovely spot to enjoy the surrounding views, with a door that leads directly outside.
The kitchen and dining room form a welcoming heart to the home, with flagstone flooring, a further Clearview stove and exposed beams adding character. Window seats in both spaces frame wonderful views across the valley, making them perfect for slow mornings or relaxed gatherings. The kitchen includes a four oven AGA with electric companion, a movable butcher’s block with storage and built in units. The bright vertical radiators in each room introduce a contemporary touch of colour to the traditional setting.
Stairs rise to the first floor, where a double bedroom enjoys exposed beams, an airing cupboard, hanging storage and lovely views over the valley. The landing provides additional storage and leads to a spacious family bathroom with both a separate bath and shower. A further double bedroom features a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams, again looking out across rolling countryside. The principal bedroom is triple aspect, with double doors opening onto a Juliet balcony from which to appreciate the landscape and the morning birdsong. A loft area above offers additional space that could serve as a children’s den or further storage.
The Studio
A separate timber framed studio stands a short distance from the main cottage and was once used as an artist’s retreat. It includes a laundry room with units, sink and space for white goods, as well as a shower room. The generous open plan living area features wooden flooring, sliding doors to the outside, built in bookshelves and another Clearview stove, creating a wonderfully flexible space. A utility or kitchen area sits to one side, and the boiler serving both buildings is located here. Stairs rise to a beautiful first floor room with oak framed glazing and a door leading out onto a leaded roof area (without barriers). This upper space is ideal for creative work, relaxation or stargazing, with eaves storage completing the layout. The studio is perfect as ancillary accommodation to the main house and offers excellent versatility. Behind the studio is a lean-to timber greenhouse.
Outside
Surrounded by the expansive landscape of the South Shropshire hills, this charming stone cottage sits within its own peaceful idyll, where natural light pours through oak framed glazing and the gentle presence of wildlife creates a sense of calm that is increasingly hard to find. The River Onny winds quietly through the valley below, and the area is alive with birds and wildlife, creating a haven for nature lovers. As day turns to night, the dark skies above the property reveal a spectacular canopy of stars, uninterrupted by modern life.
Outside, the gardens wrap gently around the property, blending formal and natural elements with effortless charm. A gravelled driveway and parking area lead to the house, while the gardens themselves include lawns, planted beds with perennials and roses, and wild flower areas that are a rich habitat for wildlife. Fruit trees including apple, pear and damson sit alongside a greenhouse, two garden sheds and a summerhouse with veranda. Lavender beds perfume the air, while four raised vegetable and ornamental beds are planted with foxgloves, lupins and an array of cottage garden favourites. Winding pathways lead through the garden beneath an archway woven with climbing rose and honeysuckle, and the front and side of the house are adorned with further roses, adding to the quintessential charm. Mature hedging and fencing frame the boundaries. Stone steps lead down to the dry cellar, a practical storage space with power and lighting.
