HERITAGE
Lister Mills was originally founded by the entrepreneur, Samuel Cunliffe Lister and was built in 1838. It burnt down in 1871 and the building that replaced it spread over 27 acres and has a 250ft Italianate chimney which, like a great campanile in Venice, remains a formidable presence on the urban skyline. In its heyday it employed 11,000 men, women and children and was the largest silk factory in the world, also producing crepes, chiffons and, as a speciality, velvet.
In 1911 it made more than 1,000 yards of velvet for the Coronation of George V in Westminster Abbey and during the Second World War it produced 50 miles of khaki battledress material, 284 miles of flameproof wool and 1,330 miles of silk for parachutes. Hard-hit by recession in the 1980s, it finally closed in 1992.
