Description
Micklegate House in York provides a very rare opportunity to purchase a large property in York city centre. The property has traded under the Safestay brand successfully but also offers a new owner a variety of options. With a rich history and superb period features Micklegate House is a fantastic opportunity.
LocationThe hostel is located in Micklegate within a five-minute walk from York railway station and a 10-minute walk to York’s major tourist attractions. The property is Grade II listed and contains many original features throughout including a grand ornate staircase, attic rooms with beamed ceilings and large spacious rooms with high ceilings as would be expected in a fantastic period property of this type.
Letting Accommodation24 rooms offering 154 bed spaces.
The OpportunityThe house on Micklegate was completed by 1752 as a townhouse for John Bourchier of Beningbrough Hall. Although often attributed to architect John Carr due to stylistic similarities, there is no firm evidence for this.
After Bourchier’s death in 1759, the property passed to his wife, then was leased to James Walker and later to Joshua Crompton, who bought it in 1815.
Crompton’s family lived there until 1896, after which it became business premises and many original fittings were removed.
The three storey, seven bay house has a red brick front and pink brick rear. Some original sash windows and features survive, including a second floor fireplace and bread oven. The hall retains ornate decoration and its grand staircase, while the dining room and library also keep some original fittings.
Listed in 1954 along with its railings and lamp brackets, the house later housed University of York departments - from Mathematics in the 1960s to Archaeology (1978–1996). In 2015, it was converted into a Safestay hostel.
