HISTORY
This octagonal building is known as the Casino was built by a local wealthy merchant (James Thompson) in 1801.
It was fashionable in that era to frequent a place where copies of the daily news sheets could be shared. The reading room would be used by a group subscribing to it. This little merry band of readers were not quite as harmonious as they might seem and a row developed with one group trying to ban a local member of the clergy from attending.
Membership dwindled and by 1903 it was eventually used as a Coastguard Look Out, and then turned into the studio for the local broadcasts of Radio Blyth, and more recently an office.
NOTE: The property is Grade II Listed.
