Set within the Five Valleys, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the South Cotswolds, this 17th-century limestone house with later additions was originally formed from two small workers' cottages, gradually combined and extended into a single dwelling. Approached by a long private drive lined with mature chestnut trees, the house sits within expansive grounds that have been nurtured over many decades. Mullioned windows, pitched roofs and gabled dormers root the building in its period. Recently reimagined by its owner, the interiors bring pared-back elegance to the historic fabric.

Inside, original beams and open fireplaces remain. Limestone and reclaimed oak run underfoot, giving a natural warmth to the rooms. Bathrooms pair Lusso brassware with reclaimed stone fonts. A mid-century Murano glass pendant from Josephine Ryan Antiques hangs in the stairwell, one of several thoughtful lighting choices made throughout the house.

The kitchen, designed by Sustainable Kitchens of Bristol, is simple in form. Cabinetry is set with Carrara marble worktops, and double doors open directly to an outdoor dining space framed by lawns and woodland. Across the ground floor, a series of reception rooms flows from the entrance hall, with its 17th-century fireplace, through to the sitting and dining areas. At the far end, a living room with a wood-burning stove offers a quieter space to gather, its atmosphere shifting with the seasons. Together, these spaces create a house that feels both timeless and recently renewed. A detached double garage, set a short distance away, provides further storage.

The private grounds have been nurtured over many decades. Meandering paths weave through mature planting, punctuated by seating areas and quiet corners for retreat. An orchard of mulberries, apples, plums and greengages brings seasonal fruit to the garden. A waterlily pond and small woodland deepen the sense of seclusion, while views open across the surrounding pastureland. Closest to the house, a stone courtyard leads directly from the kitchen through double stable doors, creating an easy setting for outdoor dining in the summer months. The gardens are tended throughout the year by a gardener.

The surrounding area combines cultural depth with natural beauty. Pangolin Editions, the internationally regarded sculpture foundry in nearby Chalford, anchors a strong community of artists and makers. Stroud, ten minutes away, is known for its Saturday farmers' market, independent shops and a growing food scene, including Juliet, recently praised in the national press. The Woolpack Inn at Slad, once Laurie Lee's local, is now recognised for its food and small bookshop, and remains a landmark of the valley. Nearby commons at Minchinhampton, Rodborough and Selsley offer expansive walks. Woodchester Park and Chedworth Roman Villa, both cared for by the National Trust, add further historic depth.

Connections are excellent, with Stroud station ten minutes by car and direct trains to London Paddington in around ninety minutes. Bath, Bristol and Cheltenham are all within an hour's drive, and Bristol Airport offers flights across Europe. The area is also well regarded for its schools: Stroud High School ranks among the country's leading state schools, with independent options including Beaudesert Park, Wycliffe College and Westonbirt.
