Description
The charming village of Port Navas comprises a handful of stone cottages at the head of the creek, besides its very own village hall and yacht club with restaurant. Once home to the Duchy Oyster Farm, a historic stone quay plays host to the annual Port Navas Regatta - and in the 1800's granite was exported from here for London's Tower Bridge.
The North Helford area stretches along the north bank of the beautiful Helford River and separates the Helford River from the harbour town of Falmouth. The area is knitted together by the charming villages of Constantine, Port Navas and Helford Passage, together with wooded creeks, rolling farmland, not forgetting the wonderful gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan.
Constantine and Mawnan Smith provide a good range of shops and amenities, including the Constantine Stores wine merchants, whilst the university town of Falmouth with its beaches, yacht marinas, and Maritime Museum is also close at hand.
Port Navas Creek itself is a tributary of the beautiful Helford River, immortalised by Daphne Du Maurier in her novel Frenchman's Creek. The river has a number of deep-water moorings and is home to the Helford River Sailing Club and also the Childrens Sailing Trust. There are two local waterside pubs; the thatched Shipwrights pub on the south side of the river and the Ferry Boat Inn on the north side.
With regard to communications, Falmouth has a branch railway line to Truro, which is on the Penzance to Paddington mainline with an overnight 'sleeper' service to London.
HISTORY
Sitting at the centre of Port Navas, perhaps it is not surprising that this property has in the past served as the village pub ("The Jolly Sailor"), post office, village shop and tea rooms! More recently it was arranged as two adjoining smaller cottages but the current owners have brought them together almost seamlessly to make one wonderful house.
THE TOUR
Chestnut Cottage is very much one of the landmark buildings in the centre of Port Navas and the period character and details of this grade II Listed village house really stand out.
The current owners have made many significant upgrades to the house during their ownership, with attention to detail at every turn. The spacious kitchen-breakfast room in particular is now a wonderful hub of the home, well designed and including an Everhot electric range cooker.
A separate dining room with room for a long table is accessed through a useful study/office area, while the sitting room lies at the rear of the house with its granite fireplace and access through to the utility room, a bathroom and rear staircase.
On the first floor there are four bedrooms, one with ensuite shower room and a further family shower room. One of the bedrooms is currently being utilised as a large and luxurious fitted dressing room.
STEP OUTSIDE
The rear of the property is a cobbled parking area in front of the garage/workshop with parking for 2/3 cars. A gate then leads into the rear garden where a raised terrace gives great privacy and affords a nice place to eat alfresco. A further gate leads through to the rear garden which is very pretty and well stocked. To the right there is a useful brick-built outbuilding, currently used for storage.
