Description

This wonderfully renovated 1970s apartment lies in the coveted town of Aldeburgh, close to some of the county’s loveliest beaches. Inside, its current owners have infused the roomy home with a contemporary feel that complements its brutalist bones, including rich, honey-hued parquet floors and white-painted walls that amplify the soothing coastal light.

The Tour

Built in the 1970s, Mariners Court brings together modernist features - such as wide swathes of glazing - with brutalism’s modular geometries. The apartment sits mid-terrace and opens to a bright, red-tiled porch with space for coats and shoes.

Beyond lies the hallway, where rich oak parquet floors begin. Running spine-like through the apartment, the hall provides access to every room, with the sleeping spaces and the living areas on the right and the bathrooms on the left.

The dual-aspect, south-facing sitting room is marvellous, with an almost wall-to-wall run of windows overlooking the adjacent meadow. Generous and versatile, the room can accommodate distinct sitting and dining areas. On one side, a white-painted mantelpiece provides space for flowers, cards and momentos.

Next door, the minimalist kitchen has sleek white units and a soft sage-green backsplash. Appliances are integrated and include an induction hob and dishwasher. A large pantry cupboard offers ample room for bottles and dried goods.

At the other end of the apartment are three double bedrooms, all with meadow views and carpeted floors. Two have built-in storage, while the third is currently used as a peaceful study. Two shower rooms lie opposite, both finished in crisp, predominantly white schemes.

Outdoor Space

The courtyard garden at the back of the apartment is a delightful space, with large flagstones and gravel underfoot. On one side is a trellis; on the other, beds have been used to grow roses, hollyhocks and hydrangeas. High walls create an enhanced sense of privacy.

The Area

Aldeburgh is considered one of Suffolk’s most attractive coastal towns, with a broad selection of independent shops, cafés and restaurants, including

The Suffolk and The Lighthouse lining the High Street, which sits around 10 minutes from the apartment. The town also boasts an independent cinema and theatre.

In addition to its proximity to the town and seafront, the apartment is a short walk from the River Alde at Brick Dock and is well placed for walks along the old railway track to Thorpeness. Sailing facilities and a golf course are also within easy reach. Beautiful beaches are plentiful in the local area, and the surrounding National Landscape provides an array of established walks and cycle routes.

Snape Maltings, home of the internationally renowned Aldeburgh Music Festival, is around five miles away. The picturesque market town of Woodbridge, which has an excellent variety of eateries and an independent cinema, is around a 30-minute drive west, with the popular Suffolk towns of Orford and Southwold also nearby.

Local schools include Aldeburgh Primary School and Alde Valley Academy, while private options Saint Felix School and Framlingham College are both within a 20-minute drive.

For rail connections to London, Saxmundham railway station is approximately 15 minutes away by car, with direct services to London Liverpool Street in a little over two hours.
