Description

Oakbrook offers an unusually distinctive home: a two-bedroom, two-bathroom first-floor apartment within a Grade II listed Victorian Gothic mansion of genuine historic interest. With two en-suite bathrooms, an additional guest WC, fitted wardrobes in both bedrooms and a dedicated walk-in wardrobe off the principal bedroom, the property delivers practical, well-considered living space within a setting of real character. Combined with private gated grounds, Stamford Brook station moments from the front gate, Ravenscourt Park on the doorstep and an exceptional choice of state and independent schools nearby, this is a rare and highly desirable home in the heart of W6.

A rare opportunity to acquire a two-bedroom, two-bathroom first-floor apartment within Oakbrook, an imposing Grade II listed Victorian Gothic mansion set in private gated grounds on the western stretch of Goldhawk Road. The property sits on the border of Hammersmith, Ravenscourt Park and Stamford Brook, offering a distinctive blend of period grandeur, leafy surroundings and outstanding transport connectivity.
Oakbrook is one of just eight residences contained within the historic main house, accessed via secure entry with communal gardens and gated off-street parking. As a first-floor apartment, the property benefits from elevated ceiling heights, generous proportions and the larger sash windows characteristic of the principal reception level of a Victorian detached villa.
The Accommodation
The apartment is finished to a high standard throughout, offering well-proportioned and practical living space ideally suited to professional couples, downsizers and small families. Highlights include:
• Two generous double bedrooms, both with fitted wardrobes
• Principal bedroom suite with its own en-suite bathroom and a separate walk-in wardrobe / dressing area
• Second en-suite bathroom serving the second bedroom
• Additional guest WC off the main hallway for visitors and everyday convenience
• Bright reception with full length French windows opening onto Juliet Balconies
• Fully fitted and integrated dining kitchen
The combination of two full en-suite bathrooms, a separate guest WC, fitted wardrobes in both bedrooms and a dedicated walk-in wardrobe is unusual within period conversions and gives the apartment a particularly liveable, well-considered layout.
The Building
Oakbrook is one of just eight private residences contained within the historic main house. The wider development offers:
• Secure gated entry with off-street parking
• Mature, well-kept communal gardens
• A long-established and settled residents' community
• Grade II listed status providing long-term architectural protection
Building History
Oakbrook was built in 1878 as an elaborate stuccoed Neo-Gothic detached villa, originally numbered 339 Goldhawk Road. The house was the private residence of Gabriel Samuel Brandon and his family during the late Victorian period, when this stretch of Hammersmith was lined with substantial merchant villas standing in their own grounds.
In 1929–1930 the house and its surrounding grounds were acquired by Queen Charlotte's Hospital, the pioneering maternity institution founded in 1739. Oakbrook was repurposed as the nurses' home for the new hospital and later served as the administrative block for what became Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital. For most of the twentieth century, the building stood at the heart of one of Britain's most important centres for midwifery training and obstetric research, including the Bernhard Baron Research Laboratory established in 1931.
When Queen Charlotte's Hospital relocated in 2000, the surrounding hospital buildings were progressively demolished and redeveloped into the Vitae apartment complex by Crest Nicholson. Oakbrook itself, however, was preserved on account of its architectural and historic significance, and was subsequently converted into eight private apartments. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England, ensuring the protection of its Gothic stucco façade, decorative detailing and original character features.
The separate Lodge to Oakbrook also carries its own Grade II listing, reflecting the historic importance of the wider site.
