Description
Description
The Old School is a charming five-bedroom country house set within a stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Formerly the Mapledurham Church of England School, the property was built circa 1830 for the local vicar, the Reverend Augustus FitzClarence, the illegitimate son of King William IV. The school closed in 1973 and was subsequently sold into private ownership, having since been occupied by only two owners.
The accommodation retains a wealth of original period features, most notably within the principal reception rooms, which were formerly the school’s main classroom. These impressive spaces benefit from high vaulted ceilings, exposed timber floors and large sash windows, creating light-filled rooms with considerable character.
A porch opens into the entrance hall, from which the drawing room is accessed. This inviting space features exposed double-framed beams and an open wood-burning stove, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Wooden double doors lead through to the dining room, formerly the classroom, which is particularly striking with its vaulted ceiling, fireplace and two large sash windows.
The open-plan kitchen/breakfast room is bright and neutrally decorated, designed in a classic country style. It offers a range of base units, a useful larder, and charming wooden ceiling battens. Adjoining the kitchen are a utility room, boot room and cloakroom, providing practical family accommodation.
To the opposite side of the house are four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The principal bedroom suite includes a dressing room, which could also serve as a nursery, and a recently updated en suite bathroom finished with brick tiling and a walk-in shower.
Further accommodation is provided by a garden annex, ideal for multi-generational living or guests. This comprises a kitchenette, bathroom and a mezzanine bedroom.
Outside
The gardens and grounds are a particular highlight of The Old School. The property sits within approximately 0.8 acres, enjoying far-reaching views across open countryside and a wonderful sense of peace and seclusion. The landscaped gardens include mature trees, well-stocked flower beds and a pergola immediately off the kitchen, ideal for outdoor dining and entertaining. There are also several productive growing areas, including a greenhouse, vegetable patch and an abundance of fruit trees, such as apple, plum and medlar, along with a grapevine.
Two separate shingled driveways provide ample parking for multiple vehicles. To the rear of one driveway is a substantial double garage offering excellent storage. In addition, to the left of the house and the main driveway is an open-fronted barn, suitable for further covered parking or a variety of ancillary uses.
