Description

A majestic Grade II* listed architectural masterpiece on the outskirts of Bath

Description

Titan Barrow House is an exquisite detached country house of significant architectural stature and importance. Listed Grade II*, the property is a magnificent Georgian mansion situated on the outskirts of Bath. Described by the renowned architectural expert Pevsner as “most festive”, the superb facade overlooking Bath offers a five window bay with four giant Corinthian columns linked by a decorated frieze of garland surmounted by a wide pediment.

Internally, much of the exquisite plasterwork and ceiling detail remain alongside fine chimney pieces. The proportions of each of the main receptions and the kitchen/dining/family room are breathtaking.

Completely transformed and restored by the current owners, the entire property commands an exceptionally high level of finish with all improvements both decorative and structural having been implemented with considerable style, flawless taste and painstaking attention to detail.

Titan Barrow succeeds in retaining its original period charm and provides excellent accommodation for modern day family living, extravagant entertaining or social events alike. The prominent architectural features and flourishes that have been so beautifully preserved add enormous character and gravitas to key rooms. These sit happily alongside designer fittings and contemporary furnishings and presentation of the highest standard.

As one would expect from a Georgian gem, the proportions are excellent and there is the most exceptional feeling of space and light.

Upon entering, you are greeted by a grand reception hall with stone tiled floor, a central fireplace and elaborate ceiling decoration. The cantilevered stone staircase with wrought iron balustrade is a particular feature.

The drawing room and dining room are two magnificent front reception rooms overlooking the gardens. Often bathed in light via the many full height Georgian windows with shutters, each of the rooms has wooden floors, exquisite ceiling detail and beautiful fireplaces. The fireplace in the drawing room is reputed to be an Adam fireplace.

Of particular note is the simply breathtaking kitchen/breakfast room, the scale of which is rarely rivalled. The ground floor of what was the Bishops House (a 20th century wing to Titan Barrow) has been masterfully incorporated into the main house to provide the space for this principal room. A bespoke hand-built state-of-the-art kitchen with fully integrated appliances is complimented by beautiful windows and original fireplace. There is also underfloor heating and a sprinkler system.

On the first floor is a sumptuous master suite that occupies three key first floor rooms. There is a master bedroom with en suite bathroom; a further bedroom provides a luxurious dressing room and an additional en suite shower is accessed from here.

There is a principal guest bedroom with en suite bathroom, three further bedrooms and shower rooms on the first floor as well as a laundry. There are three further bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor.

Within the lower ground floor there are an additional range of rooms that provide further recreation space as well as scope for more accommodation and storage.

The Bishops House has been in incorporated into the main house and provides further accommodation over two levels. There is an excellent kitchen/breakfast room on the ground floor as well as a small sitting room/study and WC. There is also a pantry situated in what was an old dairy, with a playroom above. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor.

OUTSIDE

Outside the property is approached through wrought iron gates and original stone pillars with cobbled access to a large gravel drive providing separate parking access for Titan Barrow and The Bishops House. There is an outbuilding that provides a garage, greenhouse and store.

The garden continues the theme of meticulous attention to details, style and design. Beautifully planted and landscaped, the garden is in the main laid to lawn and enjoys a good deal of privacy and seclusion.

The are some exceptional trees which predate the house, an original pond and new features added by the new owners including; a terrace, a vegetable garden, two pergolas and a small orchard. There are also child friendly play areas and a play area in the wood end of the garden.

Additional Info

Titan Barrow House, originally Titan Barrow Loggia, is a Grade II mansion designed by John Wood, the Elder.

Wood was responsible for the design of some of Bath’s finest Georgian buildings including Queen Square, Gay Street, The Circus and world famous Royal Crescent. Built for Mr Southwell Piggot, Titan Barrow House has the benefit of a magnificent Palladian style principal elevation with fine Bath stone columns with splendid Corinthian capitals and pineapple ornaments on the top of the parapet wall and a central pediment. This fine village house was extended in about 1800 and again in the 1930’s to provide additional family and staff accommodation.

The house now has a magnificent entrance hall and a beautiful and dignified cantilevered stone staircase. Many of the ceilings have fine mouldings and the original Georgian fireplaces have been beautifully preserved. They include a fireplace in the principle reception room, believed to be an Adam Fireplace and mentioned in Pevsner. Many of the fireplaces retain their original delft tiles. The house, it’s design, plans and original features are extensively documented in the Bath Museum and also mentioned in Pevsner.

The property includes the original Dairy, an interesting building in itself, retaining the original cold stone shelf with fine Bath stone supports.

The current owners have restored Titan Barrow to an exceptional standard in recent years. Furthermore the wing known as the Bishop’s house has been reacquired and integrated back into the main house restoring it once more to one of the very finest houses in the Bath area.
