The Pink House, Bude, Cornwall

Designed by the esteemed London-based practice Hogarth Architects, this award-winning six-bedroom home on Ash Row occupies an excellent position on the Cornish coastline, a mile north of Bude. The Tour



Built in 2016, The Pink House sits amid a friendly terrace of pitched pastel-coloured homes. Contemporary in design, the buildings nod to mid-century styles with their ribbon glazing and minimal external detailing, save for pockets of exposed stone.



The approach is understated: a front door sits behind a pair of Corten steel planters and opens to an entrance hall. The house takes an inverted configuration, a considered decision that places the living spaces at the top, where the light is most extraordinary.



On the upper level, a bespoke Poggenpohl kitchen sits in an open-plan arrangement with a generous dining space. A floor-to-ceiling glass corner wall dissolves the boundary between inside and out, opening directly to a sea view terrace. A wood-burning stove anchors the living area and was built into the pitched roof - a nod to the Victorian buildings nearby.



The two lower floors share an almost identical arrangement, with two en suite double bedrooms along with a separate bathroom. There is also a four-bed cabin-bunk room on each level, playfully designed with younger guests in mind. All six of the bedrooms are serene, peaceful spots filled with coastal light.



With its own access, the ground floor of the house has a substantial utility and surf room with a warm outdoor shower and board storage. Alongside is a wind-sheltered sun garden and outdoor storage room.



The home's well-considered construction has incorporated Polarwall insulation and underfloor heating throughout, making the house cool in summer and efficient in winter.



Outdoor Space



At the front, a private off-street car parking space and EV charger offer easy access to visitors. At the rear, three terraces step down through the house, each with its own character. The principal terrace off the living space is the largest, and is wide enough for a barbecue and outdoor entertaining. The middle floor terrace is quieter, an ideal spot for a coffee with the sounds of the sea in the background. A sheltered garden on the lower ground floor, laid with AstroTurf, provides a practical, private space or play or relaxing.



The Area



Bude is a wonderful Cornish spot, with Crooklets Beach, Summerleaze's famous Victorian sea pool and Northcott Mouth for rock pooling. The South West Coastal Path is close and provides wonderfully scenic walks.



Bude has a vibrant community of creative businesses, independent shops, and galleries. The renowned literary festival brings a fresh energy each spring, and there is a thriving local arts community. The house is equally well-placed for those who enjoy exploring North Cornwall and North Devon. Port Isaac, Tintagel's ruined castle, Wadebridge and the Camel Estuary, Polzeath and the walking country of the National Trust's Sandymouth are all within easy reach to the south. Across the border in Devon are Clovelly, the Hartland Peninsula, and Bideford.



The Bude and North Cornwall Golf Course, visible from the house's upper terraces, is a links course playable year-round and well-regarded in the region, while the Budehaven Recreation Ground’s facilities include tennis and squash.



For travel, Exeter St David's is an hour by car with direct services to London Paddington. There are flights direct to Newquay Airport from several London airports.
