Description

This thoughtfully composed home lies in a peaceful pocket of Deal, within the Victoria Road and Wellington Road conservation area. Built in the 1950s, it has been thoroughly transformed into a calm contemporary retreat close to the beach. Thoughtful materials, including oak, granite and brass, have been employed throughout.

The Tour

Partly concealed by a high brick wall, the house is slightly set back from the road. Its characterful frontage, which has two sash windows and playful porthole-style glazing, hints at the brightness and soaring ceilings within.

Entry is to the Neptune kitchen, a beautifully transformed space with L-shaped navy-blue cabinetry, Neff appliances and a Quooker tap. Bead-and-butt panelling runs behind the kitchen units, with refined Där light fittings. In front of the kitchen is a generous space for a dining table and chairs. Fine oiled engineered oak floorboards ground underfoot, and painted timbers frame above.

Next to the kitchen, revealed by concertina doors, is a separate living room, with a high window and the same taupe walls as the kitchen.

The corridor leads through to the bedroom, a sublime space with a tall pitched roof studded with skylights. White-painted exposed timbers run above, and off-white walls amplify the room’s brightness. An en suite adjoins, with marble tiles, Burlington fixtures, and a large walk-in shower.

The home was recently transformed, with new wiring, plumbing, heating, thermal upgrades, including trimless spotlights throughout and roof restoration in Welsh slate.

Outdoor Space

At the front of the house is a compact Limestone-grounded space with room for a table and chairs and potted plants. South-facing, it receives a wonderful quality of natural light day-long and is illuminated with atmospheric lighting at night.

The Area

Deal is a perennially popular coastal town known as one of the most attractive in Kent. Its stretch of coastline is famed for its striking concrete-and-steel mid-century pier and a popular architect-designed café at its end.

Popular dining spots include The Rose hotel, known for its excellent bar and food, and its sister restaurant, The Blue Pelican. Merchant of Relish, The Black Pig and Jenkins and Sons are the go-to for groceries, meat and fish, respectively. For more local produce, there is also a fantastic Saturday farmers’ market. As far as homeware shops are concerned, Dunlin and Diver, Will and Yates, and Mileage are among some of the finest; there are also several well-known art galleries.

Trains run from Deal station to London St Pancras in under 90 minutes. Services also connect to Kent’s other popular seaside towns, including Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. The A2 is also easily reached by car for travel into the capital, and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone just 25 minutes away making access to the continent especially convenient.

Industry affiliations:

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses. Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced modernist architecture to a British audience.

We are excited by homes that pay attention to the timeless principles of modernism: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Combined, we believe design can be a powerful force for good.
