THE NEIGHBORHOOD
"The Parioli District over time"
There are different versions of the origin of its name: some attribute it to the Parioli Mountains, hills on which the area was built starting from the 1900s; some associate it with the peraioli, the pear growers who populated the area at the beginning of the century. The neighborhood, which is located in the northern area of Rome not far from the historic center but close to the outskirts, is among the first neighborhoods born in 1911. Its history officially began in 1921 and it took about 30 years to complete its physiognomy. In the 1950s, in fact, the Parioli presented itself as a neighborhood inhabited by the middle-upper bourgeoisie, mostly officers and prominent figures of fascism. In those years, elegant buildings and villas were erected, set in elegant green contexts, buildings which, even today, remain a historical and cultural symbol of bygone eras visible in the district. The neighborhood, which has always been the home of wealthy people, traders and entrepreneurs as well as television personalities, has been the focus of films, magazines and books over the years. The meaning "Pariolino", a term used to identify wealthy and fashionable people (even those who do not live in the neighborhood), becomes a widely used word and also enters the vocabulary. The oldest history of the neighborhood, dating back to Roman times and before, is still visible in the streets of the neighborhood. In the area there are in fact the remains of the ancient Sabina city "Antemnae", the Roman villa of the Auditorium and the Catacombs of the Giordani and Sant'Ilaria.
"The Parioli district today"
The Parioli neighborhood is a maze of tree-lined streets and avenues, stately buildings and parks with lush gardens, all of this makes the area elegant and extremely well-kept. The urban structure of Parioli dates back to the 1950s with valuable and elegant housing solutions, which have been preserved over time. The district extends along the bank of the Tiber river, a stone's throw from the RAI headquarters and Villa Borghese. It is no coincidence that the neighborhood is inhabited by well-known faces from Italian television and cinema. After the Second World War, prominent Roman figures in politics and finance, but also culture and art, had their homes built here, exclusive villas that today identify the area. Large terraces, "hidden" gardens, penthouses and villas represent a sure attraction of the most chic neighborhood in Rome.
